  • Company and role for Engineering Manager - Leading Media client:Our client is one of the UKs most highly respected digital media organisations. We’re helping them to hire an Engineering Manager to join them on 6 month initial contract.Our client create their award-winning website using modern JavaScript and CSS patterns, always considering progressive-enhancement, performance, scalability, browser compatibility, and user experience. They serve tens of thousands of requests per second from our services written in Scala and running on AWS.They work collaboratively with designers, user experience architects, and other developers in the team. The majority of their code is openly available on GitHub, and some of our projects are widely used throughout the Open Source community.As an Engineering Manager, youll be supporting a group of developers in their technical and personal development, as well as hands on helping the team deliver. You will act as their primary point of contact, providing them regular feedback and guidance.Responsibilities for Engineering Manager - Leading Media Client:You need to care deeply about the developers you manage, coaching them on areas for development, celebrating their achievements and recognising their strengths.You are an experienced developer with a variety of experience across domains and technologies, and you enjoy shipping great products.You have established your own areas of knowledge and expertise, but are willing to share what you know and are always eager to learn new things.You should be able to communicate your team’s goals and vision, and how that relates to the wider organisation. You will need to ensure that the team collaborates with stakeholders to understand what the right goals are.You should be passionate about building teams that have the right balance of product delivery and technical maintenance, and you will help decide the teams prioritisation of work to ensure that the team stays effective.Engineering managers also take part in a range of activities to improve the wider department, including recruitment, mentoring and evolving their development practices.Details about the specific team you will be working in:The Dotcom team is responsible for building and maintaining the main website, which serves over 10 million unique users each day. They have complete ownership of the platform, including backend, CDN and client side code.As custodians of the platform, they help teams across Product & Engineering to contribute, while always maintaining performance, accessibility and code standards.The team works closely with editorial and design, particularly in the run up to big events, building features that ensure that their website can present journalism in the most compelling way.The team have recently migrated article rendering to a more modern stack, based on server-side rendered React.As the EM, you will now help set the future direction of the team, which will include modernising our live blogging platform, improving their section front pages and continuing to optimise the performance of their website to ensure it continues to be a world class platform for our journalism.*** This is a great piece of work for a highly respected household name in the UK *** Required skills
