Job Description

SUMMARY OF THE ROLEThe Education Officer is a new role within the Classical Association and offers an exciting opportunity to take a strategic lead on our work as the UK Subject Association for Classics to support, maintain and advance the teaching of classical subjects in schools and colleges. You will be responsible for developing and managing new education-related initiatives and for coordinating partnership work with other organisations in support of our strategic aims to provide a voice for our members and shape the future of Classics education.Working closely with the Chair of the Teaching Board, the Outreach Officer and our subject representatives, you will take the lead on a major review of the current English school qualifications in anticipation of the next round of reform. This will include consultation with a wide range of key stakeholders (including teachers, students, academics, examination boards, and other organisations).You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the broader aims and objectives of the Classical Association, developing the role in line with your own interests and experience. This might include support for our equality, diversity and inclusion activities or the work we do to support local branches of the CA.DETAILED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCA education initiatives and activities: Undertake a review of the current school classical qualifications (England), supported by the CA Teaching Board and our subject representatives and incorporating the views of relevant stakeholders Oversee the development/commissioning of internally sponsored education projects and/or research Co-ordinate the development and delivery of collaborative projects undertaken in partnership with other organisations Monitor and report government developments in relation to education and examinations Contribute to relevant advocacy on all aspects of Classics education Identify sources of support for CA-led education projects and lead on funding applications as required Work with the Hon. Treasurer to set and manage project budgets Support the Outreach Officer by contributing to CA CPD events, school talks and public engagement events Collate data and write evaluation reports on CA-led education projectsRelationship development: Build links with relevant stakeholders and partners, including other Classics organisations and charities and examination boards Ensure that synergies across all areas of our work shared with other organisations and bodies are maximised Maintain and develop relationships with schools, colleges and universities Develop new strategies for engaging teachers and students with the work of the CA and growing membership Liaise with representatives of other Subject Associations through the CAs membership of the Council for Subject AssociationsOther: Represent the CA at external meetings and events as required, including meetings of the Council for Subject Associations Attend meetings of the Classical Association Teaching Board and Council (twice per annum - February and October) and AGM (March/April) Contribute to the CAs broader strategic objectives, undertaking other duties commensurate with the post, and providing occasional cover for other members of CA staff Be aware of and actively implement the CAs policies, including our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusivityKEY RELATIONSHIPSYou will work closely with a number of volunteer post holders, especially the Chair of the Classical Association Teaching Board and Outreach Officer, but also with other members of the Teaching Board, including the subject representatives for Latin, Greek, Ancient History and Classical Civilisation, and the Exams Officer.You will collaborate and build relationships with a range of key stakeholders and partners in UK schools, colleges, and universities, in Classics organisations and charities in the UK, and in other UK Subject Associations.You will also work with the CAs leadership team of Officer trustees and with the wider group of trustees (the Council).PERSON SPECIFICATIONEssential:Education: Degree level or equivalentExperience Working with teachers and schools or on education-related projectsKnowledge Classics education and its delivery in schools and colleges in the UK; The wider landscape of support for Classics educationSkills/ Abilities Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Able to build and maintain good working partnerships; Able to prioritise and manage multiple deadlinesPersonal qualities Able to work collaboratively as part of a small team; Efficient; Self-motivated; Able to work unsupervised; Willing to learn/able to seek information and assimilate knowledge as required; Willing to work flexibly, particularly in relation to working hours and collaborating with colleagues; Commitment to our equality, diversity and inclusivity valuesDesirable:Education Degree in classical or Classics-related subjectExperience Project management, including budget-setting and management; Writing of competitive funding applications; AdvocacyKnowledge Curriculum policy in relation to classical subjects; Classics pedagogySkills/Abilities Effective leadership and team-management; Using social media effectivelyPersonal Qualities Committed to building and deepening professional networksREPORTING LINESThe Education Co-ordinator reports to the Hon.
