About GLA Economics GLA Economics analysis and advice informs key decisions at the Greater London Authority (GLA). It is part of the broader City Intelligence Unit, which includes analytical teams such as Demography and Policy Analysis, City Data, OpinionResearch and Statistics and the Strategy Team. Job descriptionThe devolution of the Adult Education Budget (AEB) to the Mayor and a policy landscape dominated by major challenges and profound changes (e.g. the Covid crisis, transition to net zero) have generated additional analytical demands for the GLA and its stakeholders.Thisis a new role that has been created to strengthen GLA Economics ability to provide strategic analyses of Londons skills and employment systems and labour market. You will lead a new small unit within GLA Economics microeconomics team to assist in the provisionof influential analysis in order to support skills and labour market policies across the GLA.The role will require considerable cross-team working alongside the Supervisory Economist, the rest of the microeconomics team, the Senior Economist and the head ofthe educational economists and analysts as well as senior policy colleagues in the Skills and Employment Unit. Beyond your core responsibility, you can expect to work flexibly across a variety of other topics reflecting emerging issues facing the London economy.This could include work related to Londons COVID-19 recovery programme as well (for example) sectoral studies.About youWe are looking for someone with a passion for economic analysis, strong analytical skills and a motivation to help deliver inclusive andsustainable economic growth and wellbeing for all Londoners. You will have a degree or professional qualification in economics or a related subject (preferably at a postgraduate level), and a proven capacity to deliver high-quality, influential economic analysis,personally and by leading other analysts and/or analytical projects. You will be familiar with London, national and international economic trends and be able to identify implications for policy and service delivery at the GLA. You will have expertise in providingeconomic advice in policy areas relevant to the work of the GLA Group, especially in terms of labour market and skills policy and local economic development, as well as being familiar with project and policy appraisal and evaluation techniques in a publicsector setting.You will be able to identify solutions for analytical problems and you will have strong numeracy and communication skills, including an ability to distil key messages and uncertainties from analytical work. It would be advantageous to have familiaritywith statistical software packages such as R or Python and/or experience working with the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service (SRS). You will be in any case comfortable with analysing and interpreting multiple and potentially large sourcesof socio-economic data to derive analytical insights. We encourage applications from candidates who may have less experience in some of the required criteria - but are curious and willing to develop their skills and understanding. Gaps can be developed andon-the-job and training can be made available. This role will be based at London Fire Brigades Head Office (Union Street, SE1 0LL). Over the coming weeks and months, the GLA will move to hybrid working.
