Learn more at pearsonplc.comAbout the teamPearsons Data Privacy Office is on a mission to foster a culture of privacy across the business by taking a proactive approach to managing risk, empowering the workforce to understand their role in delivering privacy by design and by ensuring that we aretransparent in our use of, and facilitate the exercise of individual rights over, the personal information we are entrusted with.About the roleReporting to Pearsons Chief Privacy Officer (CPO), the Director of Data Privacy (EMEA & APAC) is responsible for guiding and supporting Pearsons businesses on their efforts to comply with data protection legislation and best practice andin implementing Pearsons global privacy programme.This role will act as Pearsons Data Protection Officer for the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). As a privacy professional and leader the role will support/coach junior privacy lawyers and professionals in their day-to-day activitiesand in furthering their careers.This role can be fully remote, hybrid or office based. If the successful candidate does work from home full time there will be some expected travel on business if that is required to perform any tasks associated with the role, and they may be asked to attendPearson offices for team meetings or other work events from time to time.Key Responsibilities include:

  • Being the primary go-to person for business teams, functional clients and other members of the global legal function for legal and regulatory questions involving data privacy throughout EMEA and APAC. In that capacity, they will be expected to provideproactive, strategic legal input and will work closely with Pearsons Chief Privacy Officer, outside legal counsel, and employees of all levels.
  • supervisory responsibility for a number of junior lawyers and privacy professionals in the Data Privacy Office, who they will be expected to mentor, develop and support in collaboration with the CPO.
  • Developing an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Pearsons business, its markets, products, customers, competitors and regulatory environment.
  • Assessing the impact of new regulations or laws on Pearsons existing operations and offerings and work with divisional product development teams to ensure that systems and products are aligned with corporate data protection policy and that development roadmapsfoster privacy by design.
  • Collaborate with the CPO and other members of the legal and data protection teams to ensure that Pearsons data protection programme, policies and processes are kept up to date and relevant and establish appropriate protocols for the implementation of suchpolicies.
  • Coordinate closely with the CISO and other relevant stakeholders to implement and track compliance with a global privacy and data protection program across the Pearson Group of companies.
  • Conduct and oversee risk assessments and support business teams in the implementation of any remediations needed to address risks and ensure privacy by design in the delivery of Pearsons products and services.
  • Managing any local data protection registration requirements throughout EMEA and APAC and help the CPO to coordinate any responses to regulatory inquiries or investigations.
  • Provide data protection advice on M&A transactions and related ventures
  • Work with colleagues in the Data Privacy Office, wider legal team and Pearsons compliance and security functions to ensure the use of appropriate data protection terms for vendor, customer and employee agreements, RFPs, bids, and strategic business partnership.
  • Ensure processes for handling subject access requests and responding to other user rights requests are appropriate and guide colleagues and business teams to ensure that those rights are respected.
  • Provide training and education to employees relating to data privacy and protection.
About youHere at Pearson we are looking for the best Privacy talent! As such we are open to backgrounds of individuals from Tech start-ups (we are on our Technology journey in case you werent aware!), practice or innovative businesses !Additional key requirements of the role include:
  • Strong background and solid experience in Data Privacy matters, preferably with both a well-regarded law firm and/or a corporation/business. You do not need to hold a CIPP/E or other IAPP qualification but must be able to demonstrate practical experiencein the implementation of privacy compliance programmes.
  • If the candidate is a UK qualified lawyer, they should be admitted to practice as a solicitor or be called to the Bar in England & Wales
  • If you are not a practicing lawyer, you will need to show a strong track record of advising and leading businesses on their obligations under data protection laws and an understanding of when and where to involve legal counsel.
  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to coach and mentor team members
  • Good understanding of cloud computing, internet technologies and technological data protection measures, as well as a knowledge of Direct-to-Consumer privacy issues, marketing rules and other relevant industry practices
  • Ability to communicate and Build strong networks with, and gain the trust of, colleagues across local and global business by bringing a confident, commercial and solutions focused approach to their work
  • Ability to Work under pressure, handle deadlines, manage complex projects and multiple tasks in a fast-paced and complex business environment.
