Job Description

The Curator is responsible for instilling a practice of care in building relationships with artists of African, Caribbean, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indigenous and Latin American descent and their communities. We see the role of Curator as dialogic and collaborativeworking in relation with our communities, allowing the space for artistic research, thinking, experimentation and play. With recent funding from Freelands Foundation for the role, our aims are to deepen our knowledge of cultural workers and communities tosupport the development of our programmes more broadly, to strengthen our capacity and to expand our reach. The role of the Curator involves responsibility for the commissioning of artists, creating key partnerships and implementing artistic production throughresearch, radical art education, unlearning and wellbeing practices, in close dialogue with the Artistic Director.As the Curator you will programme the spaces of the Stuart Hall Library in dialogue with the Library and Archive Manager. The iniva library andarchive is a rich resource of new internationalism and global artistic practices used for individual and collective study, reading groups, artistic residencies, exhibitions and community engagement. This post will be responsible for creating a strategy forprogramming artists engaging with the wider local community through radical, social and political forms of pedagogy as practice. The Curator works on our key programme areas, which include our international and national partnerships, through social and publicprogramming. The Curator plays a supportive role to the publishing platform STUART in the development of editorial ideas and programming with the Artistic Director and the invited guest editors.Freelands FoundationThe role of Curator has been made possibleand is fully funded through a grant from the Freelands Foundation. This grant supports inivas unique learning programme, and is centred around the invigoration of the Stuart Hall Library, a unique collection of books, artist and curatorial archives of BlackBritish Arts movements. A UK-wide programme of learning, community engagement, events, residencies and digitalisation will challenge conventional notions of diversity and difference; with audiences operating at the heart of these porous programmes.Main Objectivesof the role: To manage and oversee inivas artistic projects and programming with a focus on radical art education, wellbeing, and social and public practice at Stuart Hall Library and partnership projects. To implement ongoing cultural mapping research toestablish a partnership strategy for working with artists, social groups and communities locally, nationally and internationally. To oversee the process of commissioning artists to engage with local community and education providers. To engage the artisticand creative community, students and young people with our programmes through producing digital content and programming.
