Job Description

Consultant Paediatric Neurologist 6PA (0.6WTE)Applications are invited to apply for the post of 0.6WTE Consultant Paediatric Neurologist. This is a substantive position.St Georges NHS Foundation Trust leads inpatient and outpatient paediatric neurology services in the SW Thames region. With a team of 3 full-time dedicated consultant neurologists operating from a combined neurosciences and surgical ward, the service aims to provide 24/7 tertiary neurology services for the region and to support the other tertiary services provided by St Georges Hospital. The post-holder would expand the on-call service to 1:4.Tertiary referrals are only accepted on a Consultant to Consultant basis and the service does not provide for referrals directly from primary care.The team comprises:2 paediatric epilepsy CNS (shared duties between tertiary and secondary level services)2 paediatric neuroscience CNSGrid trainees and general paediatric trainees/SPINSpeciality Doctor in paediatric neurologyRotating ST1-3sSt. George’s Hospital is a large multi-speciality facility based in South West London, offering a wide range of adult, paediatric and neonatal services. It is co-located with a medical school - St. George’s, University of London.Children managed at SGH are either local or regional tertiary patients. Our Emergency department is seeing steadily increasing attendances, and our inpatient emergency admissions are also increasing. Outpatient referrals have also steadily increased for local children, reflecting the growing young population in SW Thames.Tertiary children’s services are offered by consultants based at SGH in gastroenterology, endocrinology, respiratory medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, infectious diseases, paediatric surgery and PICU. St George’s University Hospital is one of the main regional trauma and neurosurgical services for London and has helipad access for HEMS.The department has its own outpatient’s area (The Dragon centre), child development centre, PICU and Paediatric Step down Unit, with 51 inpatient beds. There are over 50 consultants and a fully staffed EWTD compliant middle grade and ST rota, composed of grid trainees, regional trainees, fellows and F1 doctors.The Paediatric Neurology Department at St Georges is the main provider of Tertiary Paediatric Neurology to South Thames (West). Patients include children with acute neurological disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and epilepsy. Paediatric neurology and paediatric neurosurgery patients are cared for on Nicholls Ward, combining the clinical expertise of medical staff, nurses, clinical nurse specialists, psychologists, therapists and technicians in a multidisciplinary approach to the management of paediatric neurological and neurosurgical conditions. It is unique in South London in having on one site the medical and surgical neurosciences and the full range of supporting subspecialties to support the management of these patients. Children are admitted to the unit from 12 district general hospitals and St George’s has special links with the Royal Marsden Hospital. There is also an Epilepsy Nurse Specialist (CNS) service which provides support in the community and both in and outpatients to improve the management of patients with epilepsy.
