The Neurosciences Directorate at St Georges Hospital seeks to appoint a Consultant in Stroke Medicine on a permanent basis.St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest healthcare units in the UK accommodating more than 1000 beds and employing 6000 members of staff. It provides general acute services alongside all major tertiary disciplines including neurosciences, cardiothoracic and specialist women’s and children’s services. The Trust is a designated Hyperacute Stroke Unit and Major Trauma Centre and has been granted Foundation Trust status. The Trust provides tertiary neuroscience care to a regional population of 3.5 million in South West London, Surrey and Sussex and district neurology services to the local population. The clinical services are housed in the purpose built Atkinson Morley Wing of St George’s Hospital, opened in 2003 to accommodate the relocation of neurosciences from Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in Wimbledon.The Neurosciences Directorate has been prioritised as a key area for the Trust as part of its 5 Year Strategy, launched in 2019. St. George’s is one of the leading stroke services in the UK as the single Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) serving South West London, as well as providing a Stroke Unit and rapid access TIA service for local patients. The stroke and neurology services at St. Georges have expanded significantly in recent years. In addition to increased activity we have provided a 24/7 stroke thrombectomy service since 2016. We are also a thriving academic centre with many hyperacute, acute, secondary prevention and rehabilitation studies on our stroke research portfolio.This is a stroke post. Therefore, we are looking for an enthusiastic and able stroke physician from a geriatric medicine or neurology background to join eight stroke physicians and a stroke nurse consultant to offer comprehensive care for stroke patients within the Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre. Five consultants come from a background in geriatric medicine and three from neurology. Therefore, we are looking for a stroke physician who will be responsible for stroke patient care across the patient pathway. The post holder will contribute to the whole of the stroke service including the Hyperacute service, Stroke Unit, rapid access TIA service and dedicated stroke outpatient clinics.This job description is intended to cover the main points of the post only.
