These involved a new partnership with other trusts, internal crisis pathway re-design and a newly funded 3 borough children and young people’s mental health liaison service.Building on existing close partnerships, the South London Partnership was formed in 2017 and incorporates Oxleas; South London and Maudsley; and South West London and St George’s Trusts. It delivers New Models of Care for adult forensic patients and for children and young people. The partnership was successful in bidding to become Wave 2 (Tier 4 CAMHS) New Model of Care site in conjunction with NHS England. Since its inception, SLP have focused on adding value and driving improvements in patient experience and outcomes across the South London population. Improvements have included a 93% decrease in out of area placements for young people and enhanced community based interventions (eg DBT services and crisis services) which have reduced the need for hospital admissions. SLP are a provider collaborative from 1st Oct 2020, responsible for managing budgets and the patient pathways for inpatient and crisis care in CAMHS across two Integrated Care systems and 12 CCGs.The principles of the CAMHS New Care Model are as follows:

  • Young people with Emerging Unstable Personality Disorder will be protected from unhelpful admissions
  • Investment in local services will be targeted to keep young people out of hospital and admissions shorter
  • Care will be provided in line with the evidence base and NICE guidance
  • One CAMHS Support / Crisis line will provide a responsive and truly accessible service, linked to local crisis teams across the boroughs/Trusts

  • Our model will be underpinned by principles of evidence based care. We will aim to use the established evidence based as well as engage in research and drive forward principals of evidence based care

Envisaged to prevent unhelpful admissions, enable quicker discharges and ensure better environments on IP wards
  • Case Management – building upon SLaM expertise ensuring that children and young people are cared for in most appropriate setting/service. Also central to repatriation of out of area young people
  • Psychiatric Intensive Care – Work already underway to increase provision at SLaM
  • Strengthening of the Eating Disorder Pathway – Strengthening community provision to prevent unnecessary admissions and facilitate quick discharge with appropriate packages of community care
  • Autism and Learning Disability Support Packages – Working closely with Transforming Care Partnership to design patient focused packages of care that meet the needs of the individuals in this cohortAlongside the New Care Model, new CCG investment across Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich allowed the establishment of a Children and Young People’s Mental Health Liaison Service. This service operates out of hours between 8am and 10pm, 7 days a week, providing CAMHS assessments for crisis presentations in A&E. The liaison service serves two local hospitals, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich and Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough. CAMHS successfully completed care pathway redesign to ensure that our crisis and rapid response services provided integrated, high quality assessment, support and interventions in and out of hours.
