Purdy Smith is delighted to be recruiting a commercial lawyer to join our busy and growing practice based in central London.The firmPurdy Smith is a boutique commercial law firm based in London that opened its doors for business in July 2017. The firm was established by Mark Smith, its Founder & CEO, and has swiftly become a highly respected player in its core areas of advertising, consumer,intellectual property and data privacy law.Purdy Smith counsels a range of household name brands and intermediaries on a variety of issues across its focus areas. Matters advised on include commercial contracts, intellectual property rights, consumer litigation, GDPR, e-commerce issues, gamblinglaw and the regulation of advertising and marketing. The firm also has considerable experience in dealing with regulators, particularly the Advertising Standards Authority, and in handling international projects for its clients.Purdy Smiths client base includes household names in a range of sectors including food, travel, cosmetics, retail, and tech, as well as marketing agencies and overseas law firms that work with leading brands. The firm prides itself on having a friendly and relaxed culture andwould provide a particularly collegiate and supportive environment in which to build your career.The roleThe commercial lawyer role will involve working on a variety of workstreams across the firms areas of expertise.With respect to advisory work this could include advising on marketing copy compliance, prize promotions, direct marketing, consumer law, trademarks and copyright, data privacy, e-commerce issues, the Gambling Act 2005 and the regulation of advertising andmarketing. Sector-specific rules will be relevant on occasions, such as the restrictions in the CAP/BCAP Codes relating to the advertising of particular product categories, or the consumer protection measures relating to package travel.There will also be opportunities to work on commercial contracts such as creative services agreements, media buying agreements, IP licences, sponsorship contracts, endorsement deals and data processing agreements. You will get to work on consumer-facingcontractual documents and notices too, for example terms and conditions of sale, website terms of use, prize promotion terms and conditions, privacy policies and cookies policies.A particularly key element of the role will involve managing the defence of consumer litigation claims for an internationally renowned brand both in the UK and across other major European markets. Indeed, a considerable proportion of the firms work is internationalin nature and involves co-ordinating advice from lawyers based in overseas jurisdictions, particularly from other European countries but also from further afield, in the firms areas of expertise. Any business is always conducted in English, but foreign languageskills are of course welcome.Another important aspect of the role will be contributing to Purdy Smiths business development and marketing activities such as writing articles and other materials, assisting with client seminars and training sessions, and attending events on behalf ofthe firm.This is an exciting opportunity to join a modern, forward-thinking boutique law firm with an outstanding reputation in its chosen areas.   • A lawyer with at least 2-5 years post-qualification experience.
  • Significant experience in at least some of the firms key focus areas whether in private practice or an in-house role.
  • Excellent academics.
  • Genuine interest in advertising, consumer, intellectual property, and data privacy law.
  • Good understanding of contract and IP law with solid drafting skills.
  • A self-starter who is willing to assume responsibility for smaller matters (under supervision).
  • Excellent work ethic and a commitment to producing work of the highest quality.
  • Client-focused and commercially aware with strong attention to detail.
  • First-rate communication, organisation, and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well both in a team and independently.
  • A friendly and down-to-earth personality.
Note that due to the nature of the work and structure of the firm, we are looking for a junior to mid-level lawyer with experience advising on UK commercial law as per the above description, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.Salary and benefits
  • Salary of £60,000-£75,000 (depending on experience).
  • Twenty-five (25) days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • One day per week working from home (if desired).
