Job Description

Summary We have a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about great conservation. As the Collections and House Officer, youll lead on the care and presentation of this unique Tudor mansion in the heart of Hackney. Variety is the order of the workingday; youll be involved in everything from preparing the house for opening, to managing volunteers and delivering visitor experiences which present the property and the collection, in new and innovative ways as well as supporting with the many events hostedat Sutton.Hours: 37.5 per week. MondayFriday (occasional weekend working required)Salary: £24393 per annum. Inclusive of an additional Inner London Weighting allowance of £4,465 per annum.Contract: Permanent role What its like to work here Set in the heart of lively Hackney, Sutton Houses history spans over 500 years, from a seat of Tudor power to an 80s punk squat. Today, Sutton acts as a lively cultural and social centre for the community and a venue for weddings and private events, whilstcontinuing to attract visitors through guided specialist tours. A strong team spirit and collaborative working environment is key to the success of Sutton House and we are looking for a proactive, creative colleague to care for the collection and support itsfuture vision. What youll be doing As the Collections and House Officer, youll be responsible for the daily opening of the house, ensuring appropriate resources are in place to provide a consistent and excellent visitor experience. Youll be responsible for managing the routine and deepcleaning programmes and will manage a team of conservation volunteers on a day-to-day basis. You will be confident in carrying out compliance tasks, ensuring tasks are carried out to a high standard in line with Trust guidance to manage risks to the public,staff and volunteers.You will be confident in communicating with external contractors to coordinate onsite building maintenance tasks.Youll collect and accurately record information during housekeeping routines to inform our understanding of the house and the collection and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve, interpret, and present the property. Leadingby example youll ensure a culture of excellent customer care, engaging our visitors with conservation and the history of Sutton House, sharing tales from the past as well as your personal experience of working here. Who were looking for

  • Knowledge of customer care and approaches to optimising visitor enjoyment.
  • Good team player with day to day line management and supervisory skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills enabling relationships to be maintained.
  • Some knowledge and experience of managing costs and expenditure.
  • Willing to contribute original or imaginative ways to make elements of the collection or house that are difficult to reach accessible to all visitors.
