Job Description

Children’s Medicine and Neonatology DirectorateLocation: Guy’s and St. Thomas’ HospitalPost: Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Allergy £ 38,694 per annumFull time: 5 days The Children’s Allergy Service is seeking a full time clinical fellow in Paediatric Allergy to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team as a fixed term position. The department was founded in 2006 and has grown rapidly since and is now the largest of its kind in the UK. We are currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is made up of two of London’s best known teaching hospitals and employs over 13,650 staff and have over 2 million patient contacts a year. Our annual turnover is now £1.3 billion. The Children’s Allergy Service offers a wide and comprehensive range of services to children with allergic disorders. The Clinical Fellow will help run these services and will undertake 3 general outpatient sessions per week to cover leave. They will be expected to take an active role in research and development and to participate in the teaching programs of the department. There is the option of undertaking general paediatric on calls within this post, however no prior commitment to fulfilling a position on the rota.The post holder will be expected to take an operational role in managing the Allergy Academy, the department’s post-graduate teaching institute. The role involves interfacing between a wide range of clinical health professionals, opinion leaders, academic institutions and logistic experts. The emphasis of this role is on clinical and educational innovation, to enable quality improvement within both fields. An able candidate may wish to consider applying for a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as a post-graduate teaching qualification. This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.The Evelina Children’s Hospital is the first Children’s Hospital to be built in London for over a hundred years. We provide comprehensive health services from before birth, throughout childhood and into adult life. Within the trust there are 167 paediatric beds, with an additional 20 paediatric intensive care beds, 52 neonatal beds, 5 operating theatres plus 1 cardiac theatre. We have a full children’s imaging service, a kidney dialysis unit, outpatients and medical day care unit and a hospital school. The trust serves the large local paediatric population and provides tertiary referral services for the South Thames Region and beyond. Specialist paediatric services include: Allergy, Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD), Neurology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Paediatric Intensive Care, Neonatal Intensive Care & Special Care Baby Unit, Clinical Genetics, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Accident & Emergency, Allergy, Urology, ENT, Orthopaedics and Cleft Services. The trust provides the Regional Paediatric Intensive Care Retrieval ServiceYou must be fully registered with the GMC/GDC and hold a License to Practice and have experience in Paediatric Allergy. The post holder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.This clinical fellow post is suitable for a doctor (pre or post CCT) hoping to pursue allergy as a special interest or hoping to gain additional allergy experience. If the applicant is a trainee who would like to do allergy SPIN then it is possible to start the application process for OOPT while waiting for shortlisting and interview. In view of the shortage of allergy posts for SPIN training it may be approved as OOPT.
