Climate Advisor - British Standards InstitutionLocation: Remote in the UKRate: £500-£1000/day depending on experienceClimate17 are proud to partner with a prestigious, leading standards-making organisation to help and form a team who can advise on climate change in the following specific sectors:

It is the oldest standards-making body in the world. BSI is independent of government, industry, and trade associations. By virtue of its constitution, it is a non-profit distributing company.BSI provides services worldwide to both the private and public sectors. BSI is home of the Kitemark.BSI has many standards that are essential in supporting the climate agenda; for example, they help organisations adapt to climate change, quantify greenhouse gas emissions and promote the dissemination of good practices in environmental management. Standardscan be extremely useful tools for industry, policy makers and other stakeholders to help them reach their climate goals. BSI is committed to working with its members, stakeholders and partners to ensure that its Standards and publications are used as widelyas possible to accelerate the successful achievement of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Call for Action on Adaptation and Resilience.About the roleAs part of its activities under the London Declaration, BSI wishes to partner with Climate17 to recruit climate advisors who will assist technical committees by suggesting specific revisions to existing standards to bring them in line with climate science.The role of the climate advisor will be to support the implementation of the ISO London Declaration Action Plan.The London Declaration, signed in September 2021, commits BSI to:- Foster the active consideration of climate science and associated transitions in the development of all new and revised standards and publications- Facilitate the involvement of civil society and those most vulnerable to climate change in the development of standards and publications- Develop and publish an Action Plan and Measurement Framework detailing concrete actions and initiatives and a reporting mechanism to track progressExpected outputClimate advisors have the following mandate:
  • Review selected British standards, PAS, and Flex, and provide practical advice and specific detailed recommendations to British technical committees on how these can be revised to take climate science in consideration
  • Provide generic, sector-specific climate considerations for standards developers, where appropriate
  • Report and communicate with the focal point at BSI
  • Communicate with and advise designated British technical committees or subcommittees upon request.
Qualifications and ExperienceRequired
  • Formal education (university-level) in climate science.
  • Past or current experience related directly to climate science and its practical application in the relevant sector
  • Independence from any BSI technical committees or working groups
  • Knowledge of the British specifics of the sector
  • English written and oral proficiency
Desirable
  • Experience in drafting or carrying out research on guidelines and/or best practices.
  • Membership or affiliations with well-established climate science organizations.
  • Relevant publications (books or scientific journal articles).
  • Knowledge about standards development organizations
SkillsCommunication:
  • Ability to work well in a team, effectively convey ideas, ability to produce clear and concise reports and specific detailed technical recommendations
  • Ability to engage with any type of stakeholder as well as understanding their specific needs and constraints
  • Ability to deliver information in a clear and unambiguous manner to expert and non-expert audiences.
Analytical skills:
  • Ability to apply own technical knowledge to BSIs environment, in relation to improving the climate impact of the technical content of standards.
Problem solving:
  • Good at harnessing the skills listed above with the objective of reaching the best solution or proposal.
Collaboration, openness and multidisciplinary:
  • Ability to work with peers from the same discipline as well as other disciplines with the aim of finding the solution to a common problem.
