Job Description

Bank of England Career Returners Programme - Monetary Analysis Location: London Start date: March/April 2021 Programme: 6 month returnship Salary: Competitive package About the Bank of England As a place of work, the Bank feels different from most other organisations. About Monetary Analysis at the Bank of England Monetary Analysis (MA) provides the core analytic support that underpins the regular setting of Bank Rate by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to meet the inflation target. We are closely linked to the MPC Unit, which supports the external members of the MPC. Monetary Analysis is fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive working environment. MA will fully support your participation in the mentoring provided by Women Returners and support your return to the working environment. Due to Covid-19, most staff are currently working remotely. This is being kept under review as the situation evolves. The job You will work in one of the five divisions in Monetary Analysis, focussing on topics related to your divisions area of interest, such as macro-financial conditions, the state of the real and nominal economy or more structural, research-orientated issues. You will take active responsibility for delivering your analytical output, working closely with other analytical staff, both within your division and beyond. You will ensure that our work is impactful and delivered on time and to the highest standards of accuracy and technical quality. This is a senior economist role but we are open to candidates at economist or management level based on the right candidates experience. The area of focus will be identified subject to your skills and interests and the business demand at the time. Subject to progression from the initial six-month placement, there may be opportunities over time to explore other areas of interest. You may have experience in forecasting, modelling, econometrics, finance, government or similar analytical areas. What you can expect

  • The Career Returners Programme offers a paid placement of six months, starting in September 2019, and the possibility of a permanent role at the end of the assignment.

Who the Bank are looking for Essential CriteriaThe Programme is open to people who have had a career break of two or more years. You may have taken time out for childcare or eldercare responsibilities, for relocation or other reasons. Note that if, during your career break, you have done voluntary work, ad-hoc project work or worked on a very limited basis in a capacity unrelated to your profession, you are still eligible to apply. For a role in Monetary Analysis you will need: • An interest in economics and the work of the Monetary Policy Committee. • A postgraduate qualification, such as a Masters, or equivalent work experience. Be Be Proficient at analysing data, identifying trends and assessing the significance of changes. • Ability to produce consistently accurate work. • Capable of producing clear and compelling written analysis, adapting your content and style to the audience. • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively. • Excellent time management and organisational skills, to ensure that shorter-term requests are delivered but also longer-term project deadlines are met. Desirable Criteria• Knowledge of econometric/statistical software (e.g. R, Eviews, Matlab or Stata) would be an advantage, but training can be provided. • Confidence in presenting views to senior policymakers, and adapting style and content to the audience. • Experience of working across boundaries, bringing together views from a diverse set of perspectives to form a coherent narrative. The opportunity The salary will depend on the successful candidates experience, with a range of £45,900 to £72,400.
