Job Description

Job Title: Boarding House CaretakerLocation: SE LondonSalary: £11.39 per hourJob Type: Full Time, Permanent (40 hours per week)Closing Date: 4.00pm on 18th November 2020Start Date: 4th January 2021The College is an academically selective independent boys school just 11 minutes by train from London Victoria.Job Purpose:The Boarding House Caretaker is responsible for providing a high level of general upkeep and daily cleaning of the communal areas of a senior boys boarding house and the tidying and maintenance of its garden and grounds.Key Responsibilities:Daily Tasks:

  • Clean and hoover all corridors, landings, the link area and the laundry room
  • Clean and tidy all of the kitchens in Blew House
  • Replenish bread and milk and other items to keep the kitchens stocked
  • Remove and dispose of rubbish from the communal areas
  • Carry out general repairs and minor maintenance jobs, liaising with the Maintenance Department as and when required
    • Weekly Tasks:
  • Put the refuse/recycling bins out for collection
  • Order and collect household stores and cleaning materials
  • Clean the boarding house lift
  • Maintain the boarding house grounds including gardening, mowing the lawn and maintaining the hedges
    • Termly and Other Tasks:
  • Strip and polish the link floor
  • Wash and re-paint the walls as necessary
  • Shampoo the carpets
  • Defrost and clean the fridges
  • Assist with the set-up of boarding house functions
  • Prepare the boarding house for lettings (e.g. putting up beds, move and reinstate furniture etc.), particularly during school holidays
    • Additional Duties:
  • Cover any absence of the Ivyholme Caretaker
  • Act as Fire Warden for the boarding house
  • Assist the Boarding Housemaster or an appointed person with the organisation of boarding house social events
  • Liaise with the Boarding House Matron as and when required
  • Any other duties that may reasonably be requested
    • Candidate Requirements:Essential
  • Previous experience of working in a similar capacity, preferably in an educational environment
  • A qualification in either gardening, decorating or maintenance
  • Proven ability to perform a practical, hands-on role
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance tasks
  • Efficient and adaptable and willing to use initiative when necessary
  • Capable of working independently and able to anticipate problems that may arise
  • Practical and willing to take on new tasks
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Methodical and organised, with an eye for detail
  • Good interpersonal skills, empathetic, calm under pressure
  • Good communication skills
  • Sympathetic to a boarding environment
    • Benefits:
  • 20 days per annum plus bank holidays increasing to 25 days per annum after completion of 5 years service

  • A free meal is available once per shift when the cafeteria is open
    • Working Hours: 40 hours per week all year round working 08.00 to 16.30 with a half hour unpaid lunch break each day and an additional 3 hours to be worked on Saturday mornings during term time (35 weeks).Probation Period: 6 months, with an interim review after 3 months at which times the position will be reviewed.
