We cover all disciplines in pathology including allergy, biochemistry and endocrinology, haematology and blood transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology, and microbiology and serology, with each laboratory equipped with the best available analytical instrumentation.Job Description The main purpose of this role is to assist in the delivery of SCMD clinical diagnostic services. This will include taking a lead role in the preparation of FFPE material for subsequent DNA extraction (curl cutting) and/or review by pathology staff (slide prep/staining), as well as participation in the workload share of DNA extraction and setup of a range of PCR based diagnostic assays used in the management of cancer care.Sarah Cannon Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, Molecular analysis:At Sarah Cannon Molecular Diagnostics, we perform a comprehensive range of molecular tests to support the oncology care pathway.   • Day to day running and delivery of the Molecular Diagnostic Service
  • Lead role (including the training and/or supervision of others) in the preparation of FFPE material for subsequent DNA extraction (curl cutting) and/or review by pathology staff (slide prep/staining).
  • Participate in the workload share of DNA extraction and setup of a range of PCR based diagnostic assays, including assessment of clonal rearrangements in haematological malignancies.
  • Ensure that all stocks and supplies required to maintain uninterrupted delivery of the above services are efficiently managed with appropriate storage and any details required by controlled/documented procedures accurately recorded.
  • To perform and participate in cleaning measures and procedures that are in place to keep the risks of contamination to an absolute minimum ensuring that the laboratory operates safely and efficiently
  • To participate in any other laboratory duties commensurate with grade as required.
  • Administrative duties are required in this role such as filing, shredding, shared reception duties, phone duties, clinical report dispatch, email duties etc
  • Participate in the completion of internal audits and quality improvement measures as required, including participation in external quality assessment programmes.
  • Ensure that all controlled documents such as SOPs directly relating to the duties for which the role is responsible are kept up to date and fit for purpose. Also, to assist others as appropriate with the maintenance of controlled documents application to the general operation of the laboratory/clinical service.
  • Attend laboratory staff meetings and other meetings as required
  • Ensure that the welfare of the patient is paramount. Procedures either directly or indirectly performed can adversely affect the patient results.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of all laboratory resources.
  • Ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard and in accordance with the current quality initiatives within the working area.
  • Be aware of your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).

  • Requirements of this role:
  • Diploma or first degree in life science, with a higher degree being advantageous
  • Experience of work in a research or ideally clinical diagnostic laboratory is essential as is complete competency in the safe usage of a microtome and the ability to prepare H&E slides for review by pathology staff.
  • Experience in molecular techniques such as DNA extraction (especially from FFPE material) and QPCR assays, advantageous, though additional training can be provided.
  • Must have good computer skills and be willing to develop these skills as required. Specific skill with any relevant scientific software applications would be advantageous.
  • Support will be available to permit ongoing personal and professional development, and the post holder must be committed to this and the delivery of a high-quality clinical service.
