Job Description

One of the largest retailers in the country are embarking on a business wide migration from legacy storage to AWS cloud. This transformation is huge, bringing with it a large amount of transformative exposure and importance to nurture the migration to mitigate any potential risk when migrating data.With their head office based in central London, our client is open to applications without a geographic fix but you should be aware that if and when requested,presence at the head office location would be needed for high level stakeholder engagements. However, the role is going to be working from home indefinately, this will shift to site presence as and when needed to the central London head offices.Your part in this transformation will be to provide a knowledge source around Amazon Aroura and Oracle RDS, as our client migrate their storage from legacy to AWS cloud. You will be fundamentally involved in the mitigation of risk throughout the migration, you will provide support at an operational level and work in conjunction with the application teams to nurture and coach across the transformation. Our client is working in collaboration with AWS Pro Server who are currently designing the solution. However, you will be an integral part of reviewing the proposal and ensuring that it is fit for purpose and that is will interface correctly with what our client require. You will then work closely with the workstream to implement the design.It is imperative to this piece of work, that as a contractor you have worked on similar transformations in both size and tech stack. Working in an agile environment, you must have the knowledge pool required in both Oracle RDS and AWS Aroura / Amazon Aroura, to take the migration through to test environments and nurture the team through to implementation of the migration.Key responsibilities include:

  • Implement core AWS data services according to basic architectural best practices
  • Design and maintain data platforms and databases
  • Development of controls and monitoring capabilities associated with user access to the data/database layers
  • Establish strategy for data backups
  • Implement and maintain operational scripts for data management
  • Implement database security and upgrades/patches
  • Maintain operational data and database management tools
  • Maintain record of database operational event logs
  • Modify application database structures
  • Monitor and optimise database and data query performance
  • Perform data restoration activities
  • Provide operational database and data processing schedules
  • Provide database resilience and fail-over testing schedule
  • Request database and data processing technology vendor support
  • Specify modifications of application database and data structure
  • Leverage tools to automate data processing and analysis
  • Skills/Experience Required
  • Familiarity with AWS Database services such as Aurora, DynamoDB, RDS, Redshift, etc.
  • Hands-on experience in a data analytics field
  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • Experience designing and architecting databases
  • Experience with data warehousing tools (AWS Redshift, etc.)
  • Ability to supervise associates and take on task and team leadership role
  • Experience with database infrastructure and architecture (i.e., clustering, failover, high availability, monitoring, etc.)
  • Proficiency in SQL, ETL, or similar
  • Subject Matter expert with MySQL (AWS Aurora)
  • Experience of parallel database technology (e.g. Redshift, Teradata, Netezza)
  • Working with non relational data technologies such as distributed file systems (DFS) (e.g. Hadoop), NoSQL (e.g. DynamoDB, Cassandra),
  • Experience of Data Modeling tools (e.g. ERWin, ERStudio), ETL Tools (e.g. Informatica, Ab Initio, SSIS), BI Tools (e.g. Tableau, OBIEE)
  • Experience in Hadoop, Spark, MapReduce, HDFS, Hbase, Hive, Sqoop, Pig etc.
  • Working knowledge of setting up and running Hadoop clusters
  • Experience with cloud storage solution (AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace)
  • Experience with unstructured and noSQL data (MongoDB, AWS DynamoDB)
