Associate/Senior Editor, Materials Science & Engineering, NatureLocation: London (preferred), New York, Berlin, ShanghaiClosing date: 6th June 2021Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Editor to cover the broad area of Materials Science & Engineering.Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isnt enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural world Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research If the answer is yes, you could be the person were looking for to join the editorial team of Nature.Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an editor specialising in materials science/engineering, to further our aim to publish the worlds best original research in this technologically relevant space. The research areas to be covered by this position are wide-ranging, spanning the preparation, characterization and application of a diverse range of material systems - e.g. structural, mechanical, architected and nanoscale. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in a relevant area of materials science/engineering, and a keen interest in (and awareness of) the field more broadly - they will play a key role in determining how these areas are represented in our pages. This will be achieved through the selection and preparation of manuscripts for publication and by interacting with the relevant research communities.This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position, and calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science.To be considered for the position, you will have: Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and possess a good appreciation of both fundamental and applied research objectives. A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality. The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this broad research landscape. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken). Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.The successful candidate will report to the Chief Physical Sciences Editor and relevant Team Manager, but also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the Nature teams - they will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of materials science/engineering research in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community.Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (ideally starting August/September 2021), and will be located in our London office, although requests for possible placement in one of the other Nature editorial offices (New York, Berlin or Shanghai) will be considered for candidates with relevant editorial experience.Please apply by sending your CV, covering letter (including your class of degree, a brief account of your research and other relevant experience, and details of your current salary) and a concise discussion of relevant recent scientific developments which you have found particularly exciting (explaining why).Candidates will be considered on an on-going basis.
