Job Description

Bastows, the foremost refurbishment contractor working to beautify Londons most prestigious homes, has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Estimator to join the team based in Central London.We are proud to have worked for the most eminent estates, surveyors and property management companies adding, maintaining and restoring the value in their properties since 1963.In recent years we have grown to offer a broad spectrum of services to Londons prestige property managers and surveyors looking to restore, maintain and add value to their property portfolio.We now have an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified HNC/ HND graduate, BSc Undergraduate or recent BSc graduate to start their career in estimating and surveying.About the Role:

  • To effectively work with one other Estimator and support Quantity Surveyor and Sales Team in the management of:
  • Project tenders and works in progress including estimating and measuring works;
  • Preparation of tenders, monthly valuations and ensuring extra over works and variations to works are properly claimed
  • To build great business relationships with clients, colleagues and contractors
    • You will work with Contract Managers and Site Managers to:
  • Correctly identify and allocate works to correct subcontractors for pricing at pre-tender;
  • Effectively research and manage all tenders so they are submitted on time and correctly
    • Key Requirements:
  • Some experience in measuring/ estimating is essential
  • Able to effectively manage own time and allocate work in efficient and cost-effective ways
  • Good administrative skills including correspondence and preparation of clear, accurate tender and valuation documents for clients and others
  • Strong IT skills including Excel, email and Word
  • Able to manage workload and maximise efficiencies
  • Able to obtain and set up best prices from all subcontractors
  • A self-starter, able to use initiative and seek out opportunities to learn
  • Good communicator
  • Proactive and analytical
  • Positive attitude and sense of humour
  • Will work to liaise with suppliers and subcontracting companies to foster strong working relationships
    • Qualifications:
  • Should have experience of measuring and estimating. Please do not apply if you do not have experience of this
  • New candidates recently qualified to HNC/ HND level or who are currently studying for BSc in Building or Quantity Surveying or similar qualification will be favourably considered
    • Skills:
  • Ability to multi task and work both on own initiative and to instructions
  • An understanding of architectural/ decorating/ refurbishment drawings advantageous
  • Good knowledge of construction processes and costs
  • Appreciates the importance of responsibility in matters of Health and Safety
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to check own work and perform checks on other works completed
  • Ability to develop procedures and record/ improve on these
  • Able to liaise with Site Management to collate accurate logs of extra over’ works and variations on all projects for monthly valuations
  • Professional, courteous manner
  • Good standard of spoken and written English
