Job Description

MERCE-UK, the research centre of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Europe, develops leading edge technology to advance product performance. MERCE is focussed on development of renewable energy technology including energy systems and heat pumps forheating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVACS) in buildings. Our aim is to enable net-zero climate targets via high efficiency, zero emission, renewable heating and energy systems. The research centre shares the location of the European HVACS manufacturingfacility of Mitsubishi Electric in the heart of Scotlands Central Belt. Scotland is a modern, liberal country with a high standard of living, excellent arts and culture, magnificent wild landscapes and a strong tradition in world-leading science, technologyand engineering, including great pioneers such as Watt, Thomson and Maxwell.We are now seeking a Research Engineer to join the Environment & Energy Systems Division in our UK branch. The company offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.Job Title: Research Engineer. Hours of Work: Full time (35 hrs per week) Location: near Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Holidays: 25 days (pro rata) in the first year; 27 days thereafter; plus national holidays. Salary: Up to £60,000 (GBP) p.a. depending on expertiseand experience.   • Undertake applied research and development in the field of environment and energy systems.
  • Develop novel system and control technology for HVAC in buildings, towards achievement of ZEB / ZEH and thermal comfort.
  • Design innovative integrated HVAC and energy systems for residential and commercial buildings in Europe.
  • Design and optimise control logic for building systems, develop software code to implement control algorithms.
  • Develop models for energy and HVAC systems in buildings, simulate behaviour and performance, specifically energy and comfort.
  • Combine modelling and simulation results with comparative experimental data.
  • Process, analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Display and describe results in reports and presentations.
  • Co-ordinate collaborations with external technical partners, including universities.
  • Capture the technology invented by preparing patent applications.
  • Collaborate with global Mitsubishi Electric R&D laboratories, communicating research results, including via business trips within Europe and to Japan.
Skills & Experience required:Essential
  • Ph.D. in engineering, physics or mathematics; MSc/MEng may be considered.
  • A Bachelor degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics. Courses including, for example, mechanical, thermodynamics, electrical, electronics.
  • At least 2 years post-qualification practical experience in an industrial or academic environment.
  • Expertise in integrated system control, for example, building, energy or heating, ventilation & air-conditioning (HVAC).
  • Expertise in control, for example, control logic, control algorithms, optimisation.
  • Expertise in systems, for example, system integration, energy systems, energy management.
  • Expertise in system / energy modelling and simulation, using, for example, Modelica, Energy Plus.
  • Expertise in data processing and data analysis, using, for example, Matlab or Python for data processing.
  • Expertise in software code development and programming, using, for example, C.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of renewable energy, for example, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, energy storage.
  • Knowledge of thermal physics, for example, thermodynamics, thermofluids, refrigeration cycle, heat storage, heat recovery.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment, for example, air-conditioning, ventilation (including MVHR and natural), air-to-water heat pumps, water-based (hydronic) systems, heating systems, domestic hot water systems, heat emitters, radiant heating.
  • Knowledge of building energy management systems (BEMS) and building automation and control systems (BAS / BACS).
  • Expertise in experimental measurement, including sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition.
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial zero energy buildings (ZEB) in Europe; evaluation, design and regulation.
  • Knowledge of human thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ).
  • Excellent oral communication skills and excellent written and verbal presentation skills in English for technical report writing and visual presentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills and a desire for continuous learning.
  • Ability to effectively apply all skills in a fast-paced challenging industrial research environment within a team of experienced professionals. Ability to work independently and use own initiative.
  • Accurate and self-reliant with the ability to quickly pick up new ideas; logically approaches problems and effectively provides novel solutions.
  • Positive attitude and strong commitment to work; ability to work to project plans and prioritise own tasks.
  • Candidates with transferable skills from automotive, energy and process industries will be considered.
