The Senior Unix Systems Engineer will have extensive experience in Unix/Linux systems administration and be part of the Unix Team. The team is part of a larger Systems Services team, part of the Infrastructure Services division. You will play a key partin the success of the migration of services to Oracle Linux.Client DetailsMichael Page are excited to be partnering with a highly reputable Education Provider.DescriptionKey Responsibilities:

• Linux systems administration.
• Technical lead on Unix / Linux service aspects of upcoming projects, including availability, resilience, capacity planning, maintenance and backup / restore arrangements.
• Security, compliance and proactive maintenance of Linux services.
• Take on responsibility for several key services operated by the Unix Systems team
• Provide secondary responsibility and cover where appropriate for other services operated by the Unix Systems team.
• Conduct research, evaluate and make recommendations on products and services to aid the future strategy and continuous improvement of services provided by the Unix team.
• Provide systems support to computing support staff in academic departments.
• Maintenance of local system utilities written in scripting languages such as Perl, Python and Shell.
• Work with the team leader to ensure key services are resilient especially in a disaster recovery situation.
• Provide advice and assistance on the updating of linux installations to maintain security
• Conduct research, evaluate and make recommendations on products and services to aid the future strategy and continuous improvement of services provided by the Unix Team and wider department.
• Ensure queries from users referred by the Service desk are dealt with. Where necessary liaising with the Team Leader and the Service Desk Manager.
• Excellent troubleshooting, reporting and performance improvement skills in terms of systems you will also be able to relate to both business and technical software products. Continuously reviewing and where necessary revising systems to optimise efficiencyand effectiveness.
• Capable of resolving complex problems where there is no clear solution or specific guidance.

• Linux systems administation.

• Oracle/Redhat linux systems administration
• Ubuntu linux systems administration
• Authentication methods including, LDAP, Active Directory, Kerberos
• VMWare virtual machine management.
• Storage area network and fibre channel networking administration.
• Experience of monitoring and alerting systems, for example - Nagios.
• Experience with Foreman and Puppet
• Linux logical volume management
• Network file services including NFS with Kerberos-based authentication
• cifs/smb and Samba administration

Desirables:

• Shibboleth authentication and authorisation.
• Perl scripts
• Shell scripts (ksh93 and bash)
• Cisco Ironport/ESA
• LISTSERV mailing list manager
• Apache, PHP, Tomcat, Mysql

Job OfferSalary £45,000 - £53,000 + Generous Annual Leave
