The post holder must hold HCPC registration and hold either the IBMS specialist diploma in Cellular Pathology or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge through experience. Candidates without the IBMS specialist diploma or equivalent will be required to complete the specialist diploma. This must be completed within 2 years and will be placed on Annex 21 which is 70% of the Band 6 salary until completion of portfolio.The successful candidate will undertake all the routine tasks within a histology department such as cut-up, microtomy and special stains and may also be expected to undertake tasks within the more specialised areas and techniques such as specimen dissection, immunocytochemistry, OSNA and non-gynae cytology. The department strives to continually improve and has a number of on-going projects as part of routine service development of which the Biomedical Scientist staff group participate in. The successful candidate will be expected to deputise for the team leaders and be involved in areas such as recruitment, training, health and safety, validation and verification, audit and other aspects of quality management. The department is also working to increase the role of Biomedical Scientists within specimen dissection. The successful candidate will be required to deputise for the archive lead as part of their role due to the increasing complexity of tasks within this area.The Cellular Pathology team consists of Histopathologist consultants and trainees, Biomedical Scientists (BMS), Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA), Associate Practitioners (AP) and secretarial support staff working together to deliver a high quality service. The department handles approximately 60,000 patient sample requests a year which equates to approximately 180,000 blocks and 300,000 slides.The department currently operates an extended working day (07:00 – 19:00) within its immunocytochemistry department. The remaining histology laboratory currently operates between 08:00 – 17:30.
