Job Description

Job Title:Diagnostic Radiographer(Clinical Specialist MRI)Line Manager (Operational):Lead Diagnostic RadiographerProfessional Manager (if applicable)Head of Imaging & Chief AHP (Diagnostics)Department:DiagnosticsLocation:LiverpoolHours:Full Time 37.5Part Time and Bank also availableJob PurposeThe purpose of this role is:

  • To carry out high quality diagnostic imaging examinations in a way which meets patients’ needs within the Centre.
  • To provide clinical expertise and supervision in the MRI Departments, including the training and mentoring of Radiographers and support staff.
  • To perform MRI examinations to provide diagnostic images relevant to the x-ray request.
  • To utilise specialist knowledge in MRI to ensure images achieved are of the highest possible standard and quality.
  • To maintain general x-ray competence in plain film imaging in a back up’ capacity.
  • To take part in the shift, weekend services provided by the MRI section.
  • To maintain and promote high professional standards to provide a high quality, efficient and effective diagnostic radiography service.
  • To be responsible for the day to day organisation of a scanner as required.
  • To deputise for the Lead Radiographer in the department if required.
  • Key Working Relationships The Clinical Specialist Radiographer will work closely as part of the multi-disciplinary team in the MRI Department and with referrers and staff.Span and Scope of ResponsibilityThis is a Health Professions Council registered radiographer role to address diagnostic radiography service needs in an experienced capacity. The post holder will rotate through specialised MRI areas of the department and be responsible for their own professional actions.Key Tasks
  • To assess patients and decide upon the most appropriate way to gain a successful imaging examination, adapting the technique to take account of the patient’s physical and mental condition.
  • To be able to interpret clinical information on an imaging request form so that the appropriate MRI technique is performed to answer the clinical problem.
  • Cannulation of patients in contrast agent studies and for the injection of contrast agents as well as Saline and Buscopan.
  • Supervision and teaching of junior staff in the development of skills in basic MRI.
  • To plan, organise and prioritise own patient workload and assist in that of junior staff.
  • To follow policies and procedures as defined by the local work area, Imaging Department or professional body.
  • To contribute to policy development within the Department.
  • To ensure the quality of service to patients remains high and, where appropriate, provide feedback on proposals for improving services.
  • To be responsible for the care and comfort of the patient whilst they are in the Department and respecting their privacy, dignity and religious and cultural beliefs.
  • To train and supervise staff (radiographic and non-radiographic) enabling them to become fully conversant with the duties applicable to them.
  • To train and assess student radiographers, junior radiographers and radiographic helpers as required.
  • To develop training materials and protocol documents in specialist MRI areas.
  • To mentor junior staff.
  • To encourage and practice accurate first time right’ Imaging and strive to achieve quality assurance in all aspects of the Service.
  • To be able to undertake the whole range of specialist MRI techniques, including manual handling in a safe and secure way as required.
  • To participate in department, shift system and out-of-hours roster.
  • To ensure that all clinical and other information records are fully and accurately completed including the Radiology computer system.
  • To ensure appropriate tidiness and efficiency is maintained in the work areas and assist other areas as necessary.
