Job Description

Port Health Officer / Border Control Environmental Health Inspector is required to monitor all imports of products of animal origin, and food not of animal origin, including documentary checks, inspection and sampling of products, for a public sector organisation.SALARY: £34,373 - £39,571 pro rataLOCATION: Liverpool, MerseysideJOB TYPE: Full-Time, Fixed Term ContractWORKING HOURS: 35 Hours per WeekJOB OVERVIEWWe have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Port Health Officer / Border Control Environmental Health Inspectoris required to monitor all imports of products of animal origin, and food not of animal origin, including documentary checks, inspection andsampling of products.The Port Health Officer / Border Control Environmental Health Inspector will report to the Public Health Team Leader and will work as part of a team to undertake and discharge the statutory functions and policies in relation to the Port Health Service.As the Port Health Officer / Border Control Environmental Health Inspector you will be highly organised and comfortable working under pressure, which includes making decisions in accordance with legislative requirements.Some of your duties as Port Health Officer / Border Control Environmental Health Inspector will include:

  • Monitor all imports of products of animal origin, and food not of animal origin, including documentary checks, inspection and sampling of products
  • Verification of certificates of Organic products at point of import
  • Ship inspections of cruise liners, ferries, merchant vessels, small passenger vessels and pleasure crafts to ensure compliance with UK and international standards
  • Infectious disease control at the Port of Liverpool and Liverpool John Lennon Airport
  • Investigate complaints and enquiries
  • Attend office and site meetings, public enquiries, courts of law, tribunals as a representative
  • Prepare notes, reports, schedules, estimates and notices
  • Identify, develop and progress a specialist area relating to Port Health function
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTSEssential
  • Degree, or equivalent, in Environmental Health
  • Working under pressure and to changing deadlines
  • Able to work on own initiative and take decisive action as appropriate
  • Ability to communicate in written, oral and visual formats
  • To be able to apply complex legislation to a range of situations
  • Good inter-personal and customer care skills
  • Ability to undertake complex investigations
  • Able to actively participate in the Standby rota
Desirable
  • Certificate of registration of the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board, or equivalent
  • Worked across a number of specialist Environmental Health sectors
  • Imported Food control and an understanding of European legislation
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Available to work out of normal office hours (for which appropriate recompense in either overtime or time off in lieu will be made)
  • Full Driving Licence, provision of own car, insured for business use, for which casual user mileage will be paid
