Optical Design Engineer (DWDM)Based: LiverpoolPackage - Circa £60,000 plus benefits. This is a new role that will play a key part in a joint venture with Liverpool City Council, and youll be the SME for the optical transmission aspect of a new 210km gigabit ready, full fibre network that is going to be designed and deployed across the region. Focusing initially on the Liverpool project for the expected 3 year build programme, youll work alongside colleagues in IP and core networks and youll work closely with the vendor (Nokia) to own the design and shape the strategy for optical networks, backhaulproducts & services. The project is a big deal, with a lot of social impact so its a new interesting opportunity, and youll have both scope for growth and immediate influence. Designing DWDM active and passive transmission networks, youll create LLD/HLD and associated operationalsupport procedures with strategic vendors, which initially would mainly be Nokia. The ability to manage the vendor, make decisions and push back / challenge when required is going to be key for the role so to do that, youll need both the technical know how and confidence to make the key decisions and not be railroaded.Youll be involved from concept, product, design, test and architecture through to sign off and go live, so while we are not looking for someone that necessarily has carried an architect title, the design capability around DWDM is going to be essential, andFTTP knowledge is also going to be a real benefit.Your background:The role will blend some design, with hands on and then sign off capability. On that basis, experience of varied optical transmission technologies including legacy TDM/SDH and modern C/DWDM / OTN platforms is going to be needed. In addition, knowledge of DCNand IP Management Networks for Optical equipment and the typical range of products from Nokia, Ciena, Huawei, ADVA and Infinera is assumed. The role would suit a service provider background and alongside design, youll need engineering savvy so the ability to install, commission and test transmission equipment. Experience of both 3rd party Data Centres such as Colo Facilities or BT Exchange andStreet Cabinet installations would again be a big tick. Location blend working from home, alongside time in the programme area, which is Liverpool and then some time working in Chester. The ideal would be someone who drives, and lives in the North West.
