Job Description

Head of External communicationsJob summaryResponsible for the planning, organising, development, implementation and evaluation of communications strategies, projects and campaigns to support Trust teams and help deliver the Trust’s vision and corporate objectives by enhancing its reputation locally, regionally and nationally.Responsible for the provision of high-quality, professional communication services and the delivery of highly complex, timely, clear, efficient, strategic and operational communications to internal and external audiences.Provide specialist, strategic communications and marketing advice to colleagues, including the Executive Team, often on high-profile, sensitive and highly complex issues.Oversee the day-to-day delivery and management of the ExternalCommunications Team as part of the wider Communications and Marketing Department.Provide cross-cover with the Head of Internal Communications to ensure a seamless service.Location: LiverpoolTemporary: Expected to last 12 months with possible extensionHours per week: 37.5 hours per weekSalary: £33 per hour (Umbrella) or £26 per hour (PAYE inclusive of holiday)Experience and Knowledge

  • Extensive experience of working at a senior management level in a large, complex organisation
  • Demonstrable experience and success at developing and implementing complex marketing and communications strategies
  • Leadership and management of teams within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience of managing complex and sensitive issues
  • Resource and budget management
  • Experience in an NHS or other public sector communications/PR environment
  • Experience of consultation in the NHS
  • Experience of leading marketing events
  • Experience of stakeholder management
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the NHS including latest developments and policy initiatives
  • Understanding, knowledge and track record of managing internal and external communications in a large, complex organisation
  • Excellent knowledge of local and national policies and priorities
  • Expertise in managing complex issues and crises

  • Awareness and understanding of the political environment and the impact this has on the Trust
  • Key responsibility areas:Management responsibilities
  • Undertake full line management responsibilities for the External Communications Team.
  • Ensure reporting staff have job plans with clear performance development reviews in line with HR policy.
  • Responsible for the achievement of direct reports’ KPIs, including sickness absence, mandatory training and statutory training, Trust induction and local induction sessions.
  • Complete personal development planning processes with direct reports and ensure appraisals are completed within specified timelines. Ensure local training needs are identified and incorporated into training service plans.
  • Work in a matrix style to ensure cross-cover across the team.
  • Be guided by and interpret highly complex national policies and guidance in relation to communications standards.
  • Responsible for appropriate processing of budgetary costs.
  • This role will require some out of hours working and may include regular oncall commitments.
  • Media relations management
  • Oversee all media and public relations activity and reputation management for the Trust, both proactive and reactive, which supports the delivery of the corporate communications strategic plan, ensuring that media coverage accurately reflects Trust activity.
  • Manage positive working relationships with key journalists on high profile, sensitive, distressing and often complex issues.
  • External communications
  • Ensure that the Trust has appropriate and effective communication mechanisms and systems in place to provide relevant, useful and appropriate information to key audiences which support the Trust to achieve its objectives.
  • Lead and respond to the production of ministerial briefings, parliamentary questions and other such information requests.
  • Marketing
  • Promote a marketing culture throughout the Trust.
  • Provide specialist marketing advice and support to all levels of the organisation, including senior managers, as required.
  • Develop and implement external communications plans which support corporate, divisional or department objectives.
