Job Description

On behalf of our client, a leading centre for health and life science research, we are looking to recruit an Animal Technician to join their team to provide a high level of care and welfare to laboratory animals used in medical research. The successful candidatewill provide a professional service for the care and husbandry of various species of small animals, and after sufficient training will be required to assist with experimental research procedures.Basic Requirements:

  • Animal care qualification and a genuine interest in the care of laboratory animals
  • Previous experience working in animal technology
  • Knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986
  • Experience of working with breeding colonies of animals including genetically altered ones
  • Home Office Personal Licence is desirable
  • Ability to work independently and address operational issues
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Ability to manage busy and varied workloads and prioritise conflicting demands
  • Flexible approach to work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining the highest level of husbandry to provide an environment that sustains the specified pathogen free (SPF) microbiological status of the animals
  • Maintaining meticulous records for all animals with respect to the ASPA regulations, health monitoring, treatments prescribed by the named veterinary officer, and breeding performance for the specified duration required
  • After appropriate training, undertaking simple regulated procedures
  • Sterilisation of all goods into the facility as well as areas to maintain the microbiological barrier
  • Maintenance, checking, and validation runs of laboratory equipment as directed by the Deputy Manager
  • Attending to all welfare needs of the species involved and ensuring an environmental enrichment meets the specific behavioural requirements of the animal.
