Job Description

NHS England and Improvement is expanding their analytical capacity and are looking to recruit two analysts at band 7 level to support the regional improvement directorate. You will be part of an analytical team who support the Improvement Directorates programmes (e.g. RightCare, Model Hospital and GIRFT) across the Midlands region. The role will include interpretation of benchmarking data, understanding and assimilation of evidence and intelligence, presenting data back to stakeholders in commissioning and provider organisations, and working with large NHS data sources to build additional intelligence to support work as required. As a regional improvement analyst, you will work closely with System Improvement Partners to support local health economies to deliver improvements to patient services, and work in partnership with CCGs, STPs and providers. There are 5 analysts in the team, and we work alongside analysts from across the region, national teams, and other health and care organisations. Our team covers data from:

  • RightCare – which benchmarks the largest clinical pathways (areas like respiratory disease, cancer, cardiac services, mental health) to consider the whole pathway for populations – from risk of developing disease, use of hospital resources, through to outcomes such as mortality. Data is available from a single GP practice, to a whole STP or at region level.
  • Model Hospital – which has a wealth of data on efficiency and value for hospitals and mental health trusts
  • GIRFT (Getting it Right First Time programme) - which has data direct from providers, focused on improving the quality of care and clinical processes
  • Accessing other data, such as the Secondary Use Service (SUS), Prescribing (Via Epact2), Public health data tools such as Fingertips and SHAPE atlas, clinical audits, and many other sources.
  • For these two roles, the key skills we are looking for include:
  • Working with data and evidence - The NHS has a multitude of large data sets. Experience in these data is welcome, although transferrable skills are considered.
  • Ability to carefully and considerately appraise data on complex clinical topics. You need to be inquisitive and methodical, willing to learn new areas, and to apply analytical methods such as interpretation, statistics, evaluation, or simple modelling or forecasting as needed. As a senior analyst you will know how to use techniques appropriately and have a degree in a highly numerate area such as Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or Sciences or evidence of equivalent experience.
  • Technical skills - We currently use a mix of SQL, VBA, R & Tableau to work directly with large data sets and produce analysis at scale. As an analyst you’ll need to be comfortable and demonstrate how you can use data, and be confident in using technical tools.
  • Building relationships & networks - Our analysis and support is needed to influence the design of the NHS and support decision makers taking difficult decisions, so you need to be able to understand what they need and manage complex relationships. We need to be the data experts within a team of experienced improvement practitioners.
  • Great communication skills - You will be able to communicate your analysis, both verbally and in written forms.
  • Flexibility – our priorities and workload can change daily, sometimes questions might be best responded as a quick screenshot from a tool, other work might take a couple of weeks development and collation of information.
  • In addition to this you will also :
  • Have experience in effective and efficient use of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint – such as automating reporting, templates, keyboard shortcuts.
  • Show a wider interest and knowledge in health and population data sets - both local and national – to further help understand local populations and their healthcare needs.
  • Be comfortable learning clinical terminology – to interpret the data we need to understand the context, this may require additional research and leaning, or working with others to build this knowledge
  • Be adaptable when finding analytical solutions to problems, to solve issues of data quality, seek out alternative sources of information.
  • Be able to largely manage your own work programme, be calm under pressure and able to juggle competing priorities and tight deadlines – managing relationships and requests from 5-10 key improvement partners.
  • Be open and communicative within a small team, seeking help when required, and becoming part of a broader community of analysts across the region, national teams and those of partner NHS organisations.
  • Work examples:
  • Developing a storyboard presentation for a healthcare community (such as an STP) on a clinical pathway - that includes data from a wide range of sources, triangulates the key messages, considers the local context, clinical evidence, efficiency programmes and patient needs, and makes recommendations of how and where a system may start looking to improve services.
  • Design a dashboard to show a regional view of benchmarking data on a clinical area, covering spend, efficiency opportunities, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • Consider the impact of COVID on various services, e.g. How might we configure services differently to meet demand for Endoscopy How might we support a system to develop a business case for a new investment
  • While a healthcare background is beneficial, it is not essential, you could bring transferrable experience and skills with intelligence and data. Or you might have a huge experience in healthcare but haven’t quite developed the technical skills – if you have the right numerate background and can demonstrate the right aptitude, please do apply as we can support training and development.
