Government Legal DepartmentSenior LawyersDepartment for TransportLondon, Bristol or LeedsLondon- £63,734 - £75,200National - £60,532 - £71,000Deadline: Midday on 27th January 2023Work with central government to transform delivery and make the railways better for everyoneThe challenge The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developingand drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.The roleJoining a team of Legal Advisers working with the Department for Transport, youll use your expertise to support the governments strategic priorities for transport, which include growing and levelling up the economy, improving transport for users, reducingenvironmental impacts of travel and increasing its global impact. With 11 teams and over 160 people, we have an exceptionally wide range of legal practice, including work on Parliamentary Bills.We currently have opportunities to work on a variety of rail projects including: HS2, rail markets reform, transformation of rail fares, ticketing and retail; and contracts for the delivery of passenger services. Some roles include line management responsibilities.About youWe expect a sound understanding of public law, coupled with the ability to think strategically and creatively, and see legal issues in their wider context. Strong intellectual and analytical skills are important. An exceptional communicator, youll be focusedon quality and have a collaborative approach to getting things done.Strong negotiation skills would be a bonus, as would prior exposure to operation of the rail markets and the associated regulatory regime. For some roles, experience of public procurement and commercial law would be helpful. We also look for leadershippotential.You must be qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales (or be qualified three months from the date of your application).
