Job Description

The TeamThe Procurement team within AG is centrally positioned, to support all of the firms purchasing and strategic procurement needs, reaching across firm-wide spend, and therefore covering a wide range of goods and services. The role of the Legal Specialist is critical to ensuring that all Procurement activity has appropriate contractual terms, liaising with our wider internal legal network to ensure contractual arrangements are fully optimised. The role of Legal Specialist will report directly to the Head of Procurement and will have an opportunity to support and deliver changes to our current operating model, to ensure focus on value-adding services to the firm, and utilisation of legal support, particularly on AGs high value and high risk contracts.DutiesThe Procurement Legal Specialist acts as in-house legal counsel to Procurement and has responsibility for working with the firm to review, draft and negotiate a wide range of commercial supplier agreements from initiation to execution. The role necessitates a close working relationship with AGs General Counsel and Risk team, Information Security, business stakeholders and senior management. Key responsibilities include:Contracts / Supplier Management

  • Management of new contracts and the renewal of existing contracts to execution / conclusion.
  • Drafting of new contracts and developing the departmental precedent bank.
  • Negotiation of contractual terms with suppliers, often at a senior level.
  • Reviewing and negotiating suppliers own terms and conditions to ensure they meet AGs requirements.
  • Amendment of existing supplier agreements to meet changing requirements.
  • Support to the wider Procurement team and business owners in conducting Supplier Management activities in order to maintain and improve service levels, drive innovation and ensure compliance
  • Providing general commercial / legal insight to supplier agreements, and advice to internal stakeholders on contractual matters
  • Accurate recording of contract details within firms prescribed contracts database.
  • Demonstrating a proactive approach, persistence and resilience, and an ability to organise workloads in order to meet deadlines
  • Maintaining effective relationships with suppliers, leading commercial and contractual negotiations.
  • Working with business owners, suppliers and the wider team in obtaining best value for the Firm. Focus will be on extracting value through negotiation of commercial terms but also in supporting the wider team in cost reduction activities.
  • Proactively drive activities around ensuring AGs supplier base is compliant with internal risk management processes and supporting the Firm in risk management activities e.g. by working closely with Risk and Information Security teams.
  • Support the Head of Procurement in driving changes and improvements within the team and for our stakeholders.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience required Any successful applicant will need the following skills:
  • Ability to influence and maintain a positive working relationship with internal clients (stakeholders, partners and snr management), and external 3rd party suppliers alongside promoting good practice, acting as an ambassador for the team within the wider Firm and beyond
  • Excellent communication skills by telephone, in writing and in person
  • Ability to analyse issues and draw conclusions clearly and succinctly, and to articulate the commercial implications of negotiated contractual terms to various audiences
  • Strong customer service skills - an understanding of stakeholder / client expectations and an ability to deliver will be essential
  • Resilience and ability to deal professionally with situations of conflict, to challenge assumptions and practices and to deliver difficult messages
  • Excellent research and legal writing skills
  • Excellent drafting skills for contracts and precedents, and for policies and training materials
  • High standard of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Commercially minded, with the ability to demonstrate commercial acumen in the course of their duties
  • Proven team player with excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to work on their own initiative to tight deadlines and co-ordinate competing activities whilst maintaining a calm and professional manner at all times
  • Excellent general understanding of commercial transactions and legal documentation, industry practices and regulations, and emerging market factors such as GDPR, IR35 etc.,
  • Legal qualification is preferred, with a history of excellent academic achievement and advanced IT skills
  • Experience working as a fee-earning lawyer, a trainee or paralegal at a large commercial law firm is preferred
  • Experience of advising on complex technical law and regulatory issues; experience in a compliance or risk management role is an advantage
