Job Description

NHS Ayrshire and Arran is investing in our Acute Medicine service which provides opportunities for exceptional consultants to join our outstanding Acute Medicine consultant team and shape our ten year vision for Acute Medicine services, which is a key part of the Board’s ambitious ten year strategic plan entitled Caring for Ayrshire.NHS Ayrshire and Arran is an ambitious, values based organisation with a strong sense of quality, culture and values; a strong whole system identity with well-established and effective integrated working across the health and care system that is leading the way nationally; a highly engaged, skilled, knowledgeable and committed workforce; and through “Caring for Ayrshire” we have a clear long term strategic vision for how we want to reform our health and care system and deliver whole system excellence, quality, and improvement to the people of Ayrshire. Our Acute Medicine journey began with a radical redesign of the patient journey that was built around the patient and aligned with the Society of Acute Medicine standards. To support these changes, Combined Assessment Units were built that incorporated Ambulatory Care services that further enhanced the quality of care. Measures confirm the progress made with continued improvements in time to consultant assessment. These developments have demonstrated the service as among the best nationally with a strong training profile and with growing numbers of trainees allocated to the unit for placements. The Acute Medicine team provides the leadership for Medical High Dependency, working collaboratively with Intensive Care colleagues, and this has greatly enhanced the provision of critical care services for our patients and further extended the training opportunities available. As we build on our Acute team in Crosshouse, we aim to further develop and support our Acute Medicine provision across Ayrshire, working towards a single service model. There will be opportunities to work across both Crosshouse and Ayr Hospitals, to move forward in developing an outstanding service for our citizens, and staff.Ayrshire and Arran offers not only the opportunity to work in an excellent unit, but provides a lifestyle that can either be rural, coastal or city based. Our proximity to Glasgow, but also our expansive, beautiful surrounding areas, provide a diverse range of activities, and lifestyle options. The wonderful Arran, a ‘Scotland in Miniature’ provides spectacular vistas from many of our local towns, as well as from our hospital wards on clear days, and at only a short ferry ride away, can often be the site for unit social day trips and activities. We are keen to support our staff to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and recent investment in our Wellbeing service evidences we recognise the importance of nurturing and looking after our colleagues.Successful applicants with dual CCT in Acute Medicine and another speciality or Acute Medicine CCT with a special interest (such as Endoscopy, Education or other fields of interest) will be supported to progress their special interest and deliver patient care in those areas. The Board has a stated ambition to build the best medical workforce, which in turn will support the best training environment. To support this ambition, the successful applicants will be given appropriate time, support and development to flourish and realise their professional and personal ambitions. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to access a new consultant pathway that has been successfully piloted and the provision of a consultant mentor, if requested. Compressed working hours and less than full time working have been successfully achieved within the Acute Medicine service, something that enhances work-life balance for our consultants. Other examples of how this ambition is being realised is through the highly valued Consultant Peer Support service that is in place; and our significant investment and growth in our Clinical Development Fellow workforce that are helping to transform our services and training and greatly enhanced the reputation of NHS Ayrshire and Arran as a Board that values and supports its workforce. We are excited to post this advert and, if you would be interested in hearing more then please get in touch to discuss or arrange to visit by contacting any of the following individuals:Dr Wendy Russell Clinical Director, Acute Medicine, TelDr Mahanth Manuel, Associate Medical Director Emergency Care and Acute Medicine Consultant, Tel.Dr Crawford McGuffie, Medical Director Tel.The terms and conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004.
