  • Identify opportunities to improve existing manufacturing processes and equipment via empirical evidence and quantitative analysis.
  • Quantify the benefits of new manufacturing technologies, in terms of cost, quality and delivery improvements, and justify capital investments.
  • Capture the requirements of stakeholders and specify new manufacturing processes and equipment to satisfy these.
  • Evaluate technical proposals from third-party vendors and assess compliance with the stakeholders’ requirements. & procurement
  • Manage the procurement and delivery of manufacturing equipment from third-party vendors according to contracted terms.
  • Review detailed designs for new manufacturing equipment and verify that these satisfy the stakeholders’ requirements and comply with all applicable legislation.
  • Where appropriate, plan and conduct proof-of-principle activities to demonstrate that new manufacturing technologies are sufficiently developed for implementation in production.
  • Prepare new production layouts and operations to accommodate new manufacturing equipment including specification of changes to facility services and definition of new standard work practices.
  • Undertake factory and site acceptance testing of new manufacturing equipment and author engineering reports to document the validation activities.
  • Lead the installation and commissioning of new manufacturing equipment including evaluation to verify that it meets the requirements for operational readiness and complies with mandatory health and safety legislation.
  • Establish limits for key process variables and update production documentation to ensure adherence to optimal settings. Measure critical product characteristics and analyse data to validate the capability of new manufacturing processes. Demonstrate stable and capable production at rate and specify changes to production systems to reflect new routings and cycle times.
  • Provide instructions for the installation, operation and maintenance of new manufacturing equipment. Ensure that operations staff are adequately trained to take ownership of the equipment upon completion of validation activities.
  • Manage projects to ensure implementation of new manufacturing equipment on-time and within budget. Where applicable, ensure compliance of projects with regulatory requirements and procedures for product and process change.
  • Qualifications/Competencies/Skills:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline e.g. manufacturing, mechanical, electronics, electrical or automation.
  • Proven and extensive track record of leading projects in engineering roles with working knowledge of business systems such as PLM and ERP.
  • Understanding of the roles and responsibilities in an engineering business and how these functions operate together. Experience of the quality management systems in regulated industries such as pharmaceutical, medical device, automotive and aerospace.
  • Application of project management tools and techniques to complex and multi-functional engineering projects. Ideally, in the introduction of new products, technologies or equipment. Experience in the specification of business cases to justify capital investments would be advantageous.
  • Design and development of equipment and tooling for manufacturing with expertise in one or more of the following areas: mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrics, electronics or controls. Experience in the automation of manufacturing processes would be a distinct advantage.
  • Applied knowledge of the standards and legislation applicable to development and implementation of manufacturing equipment such as the Machinery Directive.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the tools and techniques for Continuous Improvement, Problem Solving and Lean. Ideally, applied to manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Expertise in the measurement and analysis of manufacturing processes, including the use of statistical tools, to quantify process capability and gauge reliability and repeatability.
  • Experience of procedures and protocols for the validation of new manufacturing processes and equipment and understating of the fundamental objectives at each stage in the validation process.
