Job Description

Joining our Cellular Generation and Phenotyping (CGaP) team as an Apprentice you will have the opportunity to complete a distance learning degree with Kent University whilst maintaining a paid position. The apprenticeship will last 4.5 years and You will be able to commence your Apprenticeship in September 2020, with an optional earlier start date if it is possible for the candidate.80% of the role will be carrying out technical and scientific laboratory processes, with 20% of the role being given for degree study.Day to day work can involve:

  • Laboratory work including: reagent ordering - preparation and dispensing - production of coated plates - processing tissues and samples - mammalian cell culture - molecular biology - cell characterisation and microscopy
  • Generating, culturing and manipulating a variety of mammalian cell lines to produce reagents or prepare sample for downstream analysis
  • Running of experiments and equipment to analyse samples and cell lines. Analysis and communication or results
  • Preparation of large quantities of liquid media solutions and plates as required by customers. Small volume work to produce stock solutions and for dispensing reagents
  • Cleaning and organisation of equipment and laboratories to ensure a clean, safe working environment and following appropriate safety, environment and risk management protocols
  • Document work and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results. Data entry into online systems and databases to maintain inventory accuracy

We aim to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.CGaP is a core facility providing cell biology support to the Sanger Institute, in particular the scale-up of protocols to facilitate world class Science at Scale.The team have expertise in cell derivation from primary tissue, induced pluripotent stem cell derivation, cellular differentiation, phenotypic assays, organoid formation and culture, and work with Malaria.
