Job Description

A new opportunity has arisen within the Campus Health and Safety team, for a Health and Safety Adviser.In the first instance this is a temporary appointment until September 2021, when we are anticipating funding will be extended.About the role:You will work in collaboration with teams across the Campus, for the continuous improvement of health and safety and wellbeing standards.Joining a multi-disciplined team, the primary objective of this adviser role is to work with the Biological Safety Officer to support biosafety and general laboratory safety. You will provide scientific managers and their teams competent support and advice in the preparation of procedures and risk assessments, deliver training and partake in a proactive inspection programme.In addition, you will liaise with the Facilities and Estates teams with regard laboratory design and refurbishment. Given the diverse nature of activities on campus you will also support teams in other areas of health and safety, so other relevant expertise would be advantageous. Essential Skills

  • Educated to a level 5 or equivalent qualification in a biological or chemical discipline
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent level 3 health and safety qualification
  • Demonstrable experience in a relevant health and safety role, for example working as a Laboratory Manager / Health & Safety Adviser in a scientific environment
  • Practical experience of writing risk assessments
  • Practical experience of undertaking routine workplace inspections
  • Confidence to deliver effective training / presentations to a varied audience
  • Good interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive, can-do attitude, focused on looking for solutions
  • Proficiency to plan and prioritise work with the minimum of supervision working independently, or as part of a team
  • Competent user of IT in an office environment
  • Other information Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities.People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools.Interviews will be taking place virtually and the successful candidate should expect to be fully supported through remote on-boarding and working from home until the Campus re-opens to all staff.
