Job Description

We have two new opportunities as part of a new initiative to join our team as Education Developers on a 2 year fixed term contract.You will have experience in education and training, ideally in infectious disease and/or genomics, to develop a series of short courses for researchers and healthcare professionals. This position is part of a new initiative - COG-Training, to build internationalcapacity by developing national SARS-CoV-2 sequencing capacity.About the role: You will work with subject experts to design and develop courses on aspects of SARS-CoV-2 sequencing and analysis, for a range of research and health professionals. (e.g. laboratory scientists, clinical practitioners, data scientists, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians).There are two roles available:

  • Education Developer (online courses) will focus on developing a series of MOOCS on aspects of SARS-CoV-2 to be delivered on the FutureLearn platform.
  • Education Developer (virtual courses) will work with regional experts and networks in Africa, Latin America and Asia to tailor virtual and blended distance learning formats (remote classrooms) reaching diverse communities effectively, tobuild capacity.
About COG-Training:COG-Training leverages the world-leading expertise of COG-UK to enable other countries, particularly those of low and middle income, to benefit from COG-UKs scientific, public health, operational and policy experience to build successful national SARS-CoV-2sequencing capacity and in-country networks. This will be achieved by building a web-based peer-to-peer community centered on freely available learning resources, including online training courses, train-the-trainer courses and remote classroom teaching, developedand delivered in partnership with Wellcome Connecting Science.COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK)The current COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, represents a major threat to health. The COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) consortium has been created to deliver large-scale and rapid whole-genome virus sequencing to local NHS centres and the UK government.Led by Professor Sharon Peacock of the University of Cambridge, COG-UK is made up of an innovative partnership of NHS organisations, the four Public Health Agencies of the UK, the Wellcome Sanger Institute and academic partners providing sequencing and analysiscapacity. Professor Peacock is also on a part-time secondment to PHE as Director of Science, where she focuses on the development of pathogen sequencing through COG-UK.COG-UK was established in April 2020 supported by £20 million funding from the COVID-19 rapid-research-response "fighting fund" from Her Majestys Treasury (established by Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance), and administered by the NationalInstitute for Health Research (NIHR), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. The consortium was also backed by the Department of Health and Social Cares Testing Innovation Fund on 16 November 2020 to facilitate the genome sequencingcapacity needed to meet the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the UK over the winter period. Essential Skills
  • Degree in a science (including computer sci and technology) with an interest in genomics/genetics or infectious disease
  • Significant experience in online learning design, development and delivery (online courses)
  • A strong interest in genomics training and capacity building (virtual courses)
  • Understand trends in application of technology to education
  • Strong communicator with internal and external stakeholders and colleagues at all levels to generate and sustain commitment in collaborations
  • Highly organised and able to motivate, manage, and coordinate others (who may be more senior) where necessary
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with very tight deadlines
  • Resilient, maintaining a professional approach when faced with challenges
Ideal Skills
  • At least two years experience of postgraduate teaching and course development, and / or advanced professional training
  • Relevant qualification in education or pedagogic theory, such as PGCert in Higher Education Teaching
  • Successful experience of assisting the development and integration of innovative training programmes and assisting the project management of online training programmes with internal and external stakeholders
