Job Description

Join our team of experienced Animal Technicians working in our Research Support Facility (RSF) in Cambridge. We are open to flexible workingopportunities for this role and would welcome discussion around what is right for you.As an Animal Technician you will play a key role in ensuring the welfare of the animals is maintained at a consistently high standard, whilst supporting the Institute and worldwide research community. You will be responsible for the husbandry of mice in breeding colonies and experimental groups.Please be advised that our facility will be closing from September 2021 and phasing out into 2022 due to the Institutes scientific strategy. We still need experienced Animal Technicians to help care for and ensure the welfare of our animals. If you would like more information on this, please contact our Recruitment team.Due to the closure, you will be eligible for a retention payment up to a maximum of £10,000 depending on start date.About our facility:Our state of the art facility plays an important support role in the Institutes programme of genomic research. We are able to provide a controlled environment for our mice using IVC technology, and our dedicated animal barrier with germ free and containment allows us to give provision for the housing and utilisation of model organisms in research in breeding colonies and experimental groups.Daily tasks and responsibilities of an Animal Technician include:

  • Carrying out regular observations and health checks
  • Providing food and water to the animals, arranging special diets if required
  • Making sure that animals are clean, comfortable and behaving as expected
  • Keeping up high levels of hygiene for each animal
  • Monitoring heating, lighting and humidity
  • Measuring the weight and growth of animals
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness throughout the animal facility
  • Keeping accurate records and inputting data onto computer systems
  • As part of the team you may be required to participate in a weekend/public holiday rota to ensure we are staffed and the facility maintained at all times. You will receive an enhanced overtime rate during these periods of work.Training and beyond:We will provide you with all the appropriate training for you to fulfil your role as an Animal Technician and allow you to continue to progress and learn new skills with us!Once you have gained experience and completed the training required, you could also be involved in setting up scientific studies and breeding animals. You may also train and mentor other Animal Technicians and Trainee Animal Technicians.Essential Skills
  • Institute of Animal Technology Certificate or equivalent
  • Experience in an animal facility
  • Awareness of A[SP]A and Refinement, Replacement & Reduction
  • Ability to keep neat and accurate records
  • Effective at communicating and liaising with others
  • Ideal Skills
  • Holds a Personal Home Office Licence
  • Previous experience with rodents [GM an advantage] and assisting with regulated procedures
  • Previous experience of handling and sexing offspring
  • Familiarity with Individually Ventilated Cages/Isolators
  • Experience of contributing to and following SOPs
  • Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation
