Job Description

Gardening InstructorSalary: DOEHours: Full timeLocation: HarrogateResponsible to: The General ManagerBased at Bluecoat Wood Nurseries, Otley Road in Harrogate our suitably qualified staff and a team of volunteers provide adults with learning and other disabilities training in horticulture, allied crafts and rural skills.Due to continued success they are currently looking to recruit a Gardening/Horticulture Instructor to join their team with the aim to provide a range of horticultural and gardening based activities giving students safe and enjoyable work, developing skills, increasing confidence and team working ability.You will be expected toprovide support, training and experience in horticulture, life and social skills in a safe environment, whilst encouraging students to develop and extend their experiences.Duties Include:Student Instruction and Support:

  • To develop students’ horticultural, gardening and craft skills, giving them confidence, a sense of value and achievement and a “can do” approach.
  • To develop students’ life skills and help them towards as independent an existence as possible.
  • To take responsibility for day-to-day problem solving with students, welfare, liaising with carers and parents when required.
  • Horticultural:
  • To take responsibility for the healthy and safe working conditions in their team, being situated on or off site working, or on outside visits etc.
  • To take responsibility for transporting students and equipment in company vehicles when working off site.
  • To provide Horticap with a choice of good quality plants, create new arts and crafts for students to produce, and undertake general maintenance and cleanliness of the site.
  • To support shop staff on horticultural issues, and to assist in the shop during busy periods, including weekends by prior arrangement. Assist at flower shows as necessary.
  • To promote Horticap and the abilities of the students, by carrying out contract gardening work, making and selling woodwork items and growing and selling plants which will generate revenue and raise the profile of the charity
  • Volunteers:
  • To take responsibility for utilising the volunteer resource as part of the work team, ensuring that their contribution is recognised.
  • Specialisms:
  • Individual instructors may have a particular specialism and/or responsibility. Examples of these are: life skills instruction, the plant nursery and hanging baskets, instructing on crafts, risk management, etc.
  • Some instructors may have particular responsibility for securing outside contract work, including planning and pricing.
  • Other
  • Reporting to the board on an ad hoc basis on specific areas of expertise.
  • Any other duties that may be required from time to time, being commensurate with the post.
  • assist in the shop at weekends,
  • assist at flower shows at weekends,
  • assist with fund raising activities.
  • The Ideal Candidate:
  • Relevant knowledge in horticulture and teaching is essential
  • Experience of delivering to, and engaging, vulnerable and hard to reach individuals/groups would be an advantage
  • Experience of delivering programmes in schools, colleges or with community groups would be beneficial.
  • You will have the capacity to work both independently and as part of the wider team
  • Full clean driving licence + entitlement to drive trailer over 750kg
