Job Description

43 Fire & Rescue Services across EnglandPermanent, 37 hours per week (Flexible working available)No previous experience requiredFull training provided Salary circa £21,000 - £42,000 per year (dependent on experience and location)(commencing as Fire Safety Advisor and progressing to Fire Safety Inspecting Officer)Are you looking for a job that can make a real difference to the safety of the local communityYour Fire & Rescue Service is looking for new talent following the introduction of the new Building Safety Regulator and fire safety legislation following the Grenfell fire in 2017. The role of the Inspecting Officer plays a crucial role in the Fire & RescueServices continued pursuit of improved fire safety. Preventing fires before they start you will be undertaking fire safety audits and providing fire safety advice and guidance to local authorities, businesses, the public and to professional and other regulatory bodies. The Fire & Rescue Servicealso influences building design by working with stakeholders and other regulators to ensure fire safety is considered at the outset of major building projects. The role is a uniformed, non-operational role.Inspecting Officers should have the following skills:

  • Commitment to public safety and public service
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to deliver advice and guidance verbally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and explain complex and technical information and its application
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with other organisations
  • Previous management experience or relevant qualifications would be advantageous
Criteria for Inspecting Officer applicants:
  • A good general level of educational achievement, including level 2 Maths and English (GCSE or equivalent)
  • A good level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and commitment to complete the Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications in fire safety within 2-3 years of appointment
  • A full UK Driving Licence (desirable for most locations)
  • Willingness to undertake business travel within a region as required

  • Undertake inspections and audits and take appropriate action depending on the level of compliance ranging from providing advice to taking formal enforcement action
  • Analysing information relating to fire safety inspections and investigations and present reports setting out your findings
  • Carry out investigations and prepare case files in support of enforcement action and give evidence in court
  • Interpreting and analysing building and planning submissions and advise regulating authorities on compliance with fire safety requirements
  • Respond to consultations from other regulators advising on fire safety considerations and requirements to protect the public
  • Develop and deliver advice to members of the public, businesses and stakeholders through fire safety campaigns and initiatives
  • Contribute to organisational policies, guidance and training and development
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to lead others in line with the National Fire Chiefs Council leadership framework
