Job Description

On behalf of our client, we are looking to recruit a Licensed Animal Technician to provide proper and effective animal welfare, management, and technical support to the Animal facility users/researchers based at their site in Glasgow.Essential Requirements:

  • IAT Certificate /HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline along with at least 3 years subsequent experience in animal husbandry.
  • A Home Office licence and excellent working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific) procedures Act 1986 is essential.
  • Accurate recording of details of animal health, environmental conditions, animal transactions, work undertaken, communication with BSU users.
  • Detailed knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry, and provision of technical supports (e.g. administering injections, taking blood samples, tail tip biopsies etc.)
  • Able to prioritise and organise work in such a way as to achieve co-ordination with the experimental programmes of service users and make best use of time and resources available.
  • The post-holder will be expected to plan own workload and resource utilisation.
  • Participate in weekend and public holiday rotas. These are paid at a flat rate per 3-hour session.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the effective running of the animal facilities which serve experimental programmes across the Institute under the general direction of the Biological Services Manager.
  • This will include accountability for designated rooms and areas:
o Husbandry: Feeding, watering and cage changingo Carrying out set protocols to appraise animal health and welfare and reporting thereono Set-up and maintenance of breeding colonies to user requirementso Maintenance of the designated areas (including ordering material, ensuring proper use and repair of equipment).
  • Assisting licensed research staff in routine experimental procedures (injections, biopsies, animal monitoring and measurements)
  • Administration of prescribed veterinary treatments and diet protocols
  • The post-holder will be expected to:
o Explain procedures undertaken and results obtained to service users and otherso Contribute to team meetings on such matters as developments in service, issues arising from recent service provision.
  • The post-holder is expected to keep abreast of developments, analyse problem situations, consider alternative approaches, adapt established procedures, and learn new techniques when necessary.
