Job Description

The OpportunityAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an accomplished Cisco qualified Data and Voice Network Engineer to join Gateshead Council, in a period of significant investment in its technology. Exceptional benefits including, training for further technical qualifications,flexitime, hybrid working as well as joining the Local Government Pension Scheme are on offer.The RoleAs part of an experienced team, the Data and Voice Network Engineer willmanage the data and voice network infrastructure, including WANs, LANs, VPNs, routers and switchesacross the 300 site estate,and will ensure the networks high availability and continuityof service is maintained at all times.Specifically, your responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage the local and wide area networks in a variety of locations on a daily basis.
  • Plan and implement changes to the network as required
  • Liaise with other IT teams to ensure the networks fully support the corporate systems allowing efficient and effective data flows around the various parts of the organisation
  • Liaise with the Cyber security Team Leader and 3rd parties to ensure the networks are secure and help manage security incidents.
  • Contribute to IT projects where there is an impact on the network.
  • As part of the team, manage the performance of the VoIP platform, including fault diagnosis and supporting resolution
  • Liaise with 3rd party providers to support fault analysis of VoIP platform
  • Assist with the business implementation of VoIP, UC & Contact Centre solutions.
  • Produce management information as required
  • Ensure service desk calls allocated to the network team are dealt with within agreed SLAs.
  • Liaise with the relevant colleagues for purchasing and supply of networking equipment and services.
  • Continually evaluate changes in technology and investigate / make recommendations where improvements / cost savings can be made.
  • Ensure that any planned downtime is minimised and carried out outside of business operating hours, ensuring that these outages and their impact are well communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure that any changes are thoroughly tested and do not impact availability and performance of the key systems.
  • If required perform out-of-hours support, resolving issues when they occur
The RequirementsAs a CCNA qualified Network Engineer, you will have experience of managing a diverse network, from working within a team supporting data and voice networks. In addition you will possess:
  • Advanced TCP/IP troubleshooting skills
  • Experience of dealing with 3rd party engineers to troubleshoot issues
  • The ability to design and implement new network solutions based on business requirements, providing full documentation and implementation plans.
  • Knowledge of (setting up/managing/trouble shooting)
    • Cisco Switches, routers, wireless LAN controllers and wireless access points
    • LAN/WAN Technologies
    • Creating and troubleshooting VPNs
  • Knowledge of VoIP solutions
  • The ability to manage own workload and prioritise effectively with minimal supervision
  • An understanding of cloud connectivity
  • Experience withindustry standard network monitoring tools
Experience or knowledge of the following will be beneficial:
  • Setting up/managing/troubleshooting:
    • Cisco Identity Services Engine
    • Cisco Meraki, Switches, Routers and Wireless
    • Cisco Datacentre SwitchesCisco Application Centre Infrastructure
  • Unify telephony system
  • Management requirements of UC platforms
  • Call routing
  • Experience of using Microsoft Visio for documentation
