Job Description

The applicants must have relevant histology knowledge and sound practical experience in Histology, which is essential. It is essential for the Band 6 posts that the applicant has completed their IBMS Specialist Diploma Portfolio in Cellular Pathology. Previous work in an NHS Pathology Laboratory is essential. For applicants applying for band 6 Annex 21, these candidates if successful, will be required to complete their Specialist Portfolio and the schedule of in house training provided within the agreed time scale prior to progression to Band 6 and the salary will be paid at Annex 21 of the A4C Terms and Conditions.As a competent experienced Histologist with a flexible approach to work, you will be required to rotate through all aspects of the service including routine histology laboratories including Immunohistochemistry, with opportunities for involvement in Electron Microscopy, Muscle Histochemistry and Moh’s clinic. Pathology is based at RIE and WGH sites with Moh’s clinic based at NHS Lothian Lauriston site. The department is also extending BMS roles and involvement for BMS Dissection. The department runs an on-call rota as it supports the Scottish Liver and Pancreas Transplant Unit as well as the East of Scotland Kidney Transplant Unit. The successful applicants would be expected to participate in Continuing Professional Development. This is a band 6 /band 6-annex 21 advert, if there are no suitable Band 6 applicants, applicants at Band 6 annex 21 who must have commenced and can evidence their IBMS Specialist Diploma Portfolio in Cellular Pathology will be considered. The successful applicants will be required to participate in the Pathology out of Hours service, currently On Call and Public Holidays.The 2 posts are Full-Time but consideration to Part-Time applicants will be given.This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post. *Please note this is a Trainee post, therefore Annex U applies*For trainees covered by Annex U where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:

  • up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
  • more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
  • more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
  • more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.
