Led by Professor Jamie Newbold, the laboratory focuses on the development of in vitro and in vivo models of the gut microbiome of farm and companion animals coupled tocharacterisation of the microbiome using molecular techniques. The laboratory undertakes innovative research understanding the factors influencing microbial development in the gut and the effect, and manipulation of, the gut microbiome on productivity animal welfare and environmental emissions. The post holder willbe expected to utilise in vitro models to complement the existing large animal strengths with SRUC together with establishing the associated analytical platforms for microbial characterisation and fermentation product analysis. The post holder will be expected to contribute significantly to the publication record of SRUC and will have a track record of publishing in refereed journals. The post holder will be expected to develop strong linkages with colleagues within SRUC and EdinburghUniversity, but also to establish linkages into the commercial sector and internationally such as to drive funding from Innovate UK amongst other sources. The post holder will also be expected to supervise technical staff, undergraduate and postgraduate studentstogether with interims and visitors to the laboratory. In addition, the post holder may be expected to undertake a limited amount of postgraduate/ undergraduate teaching and to develop new modules in response to demand identified in the SRUC review of teaching. To be considered, you should possess a BSc in Agricultural or Biological Science with a PhD in Agricultural or Biological Science. You should have proven knowledge and experience of Rumen microbiology and analytical chemistry combined with knowledge of biologicalscience and animal science. Ideally you should have experience in the use of molecular biology to characterise gut microbial populations and chromatography, anaerobic microbiology and molecular microbiology.
