Linux System AdministratorSTFC, UK ATC£31,305 - £34,028 per annum (depending on experience)Full TimeOpen EndedWe are now seeking a Linux System Administrator to work closely with scientists and engineers to provide them with the tools and infrastructure they need, working at the cutting edge of astronomy.You will be responsible for the management of a range of server and desktop systems. On the server side, this includes the installation and maintenance of network services such as databases, web servers, Twiki, Radius and NFS. In addition, a managed Linux desktop is provided, with a range of Open Source and proprietary software used by astronomers and engineers for data analysis as well as instrument and software development.About the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC)The UK ATC is a national centre of excellence for the development of scientific instrumentation and facilities for ground and space-based astronomy. Based at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE) and operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), it has a world class reputation for delivering innovative and capable cameras, spectrometers and even turnkey telescope systems.The UK ATC works with leading organizations, such as the European Southern Observatory (ESO) the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA, to answer fundamental questions about the origins and evolution of planets and galaxies.The UKATC IT Support group at the ROE are responsible for the delivery of IT services across the site. The work we do within the group is key to protecting the business assets of the organization and is an enabler for the work of the scientific community at ROE, which also includes the University of Edinburghs Institute for Astronomy. The work on site makes use of a wide range of IT systems and technologies and there are opportunities to get experience in design, implementation and support of these systems from the ground up.To be successful in this role, you will have solid working knowledge of Linux operating systems and distributions. You will also have experience of managing Linux machines in a work environment and of installing and maintaining Linux based services.A good working knowledge of IP networking and of interoperability between operating systems is essential.Experience of working in a customer facing support role or a working knowledge of non-Linux operating systems (Windows, MacOS) would be advantageous but is not essential.What we offerAs part of UK Research and Innovation, STFC offers a benefits package designed to provide an excellent work/life balance.
