Job Description

Laboratory TechnicianJob Type: Fixed Term6 monthsLocation: EdinburghSalary: Grade 5 £23,487 - £27,116 per annumThe RoleThe COVID-19 Testing Laboratory Technician will support delivery of COVID-19 testing data to the Universitys TestEd project. This post holder will assist with preparation of samples for COVID-19 testing, running samples on laboratory instrumentation, includinguse of liquid handling robotics and other high-throughput equipment. They will adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and will log and track samples on the laboratory information management system (LIMS).Main Responsibilities

  • Performing standardised laboratory processes to prepare samples for testing on the instrumentation including quantitative PCR and high throughput sequencing under the guidance of senior laboratory staff(25%)
  • Running samples on and performing day-to-day maintenance of the COVID19 Testing Laboratory instrumentation, under the guidance of COVID-19 Testing laboratory staff (25%).
  • Testing novel instrumentation to meet the future needs of COVID-19 Testing Laboratory, the associated project team and the projects participants (10%).
  • Coordinating with other COVID-19 Testing Laboratory technicians and COVID-19 Testing Laboratory technologists to ensure the smooth running of the COVID-19 Testing Laboratory by maintaining reagent stocks and sharing laboratory housekeeping tasks (10%).
  • Providing advice to collaborating scientists and clinicians in the preparation and QC of RNA and DNA samples for analysis of COVID-19 Testing data (10%).
  • Keeping comprehensive and up to date records of tasks performed and reporting to the COVID-19 Testing Laboratory Manager (10%)
QualificationsEssential
  • HNC/HND or equivalent level qualifications
Desirable
  • BSc or MSc in a relevant field.
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential
  • At least 1 years laboratory experience in molecular biology, genetics or other relevant laboratory discipline
  • Familiarity with standard molecular biology laboratory techniques and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with Windows and/or Mac OSX operating systems.
  • Excellent record-keeping and organisation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and efficient time and project management skills
Desirable
  • Experience of operating high-throughput laboratory instrumentation, such as liquid handling robotics.
  • Experience of quantitative PCR and next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience of a laboratory management information system
Additional InformationThe successful applicant will be joining a laboratory at the forefront of COVID-19 testing technologies. The appointee will have a key role in supporting operation of the COVID-19 Testing Laboratory. The successful applicant will need to undergo trainingin clinical governance and data security. The Testing Laboratory will run seven days a week once full throughput is achieved, when testing is anticipated to be offered to all University staff and students, so a rota of daytime weekend working for all laboratorystaff will be implemented.
