Job Description

SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors.Our Infrastructure is at the heart of our operations and this post will develop/implement, maintain, monitor and support IS infrastructure systems and networks as expertise allows. The post-holder will provide technical support to address problems/issuesexperienced in the operation of SRUC IS Infrastructure. This role will be central to the future architecture and operations of SRUC systems with a particular emphasis on Research compute, storage and network.This role will fulfil several technical hands-on activities relating to systems and networks - ensuring systems are designed, maintained and patched, configured securely and managed according to SRUC quality standards. Management of systems will includebackups, AD account management, and set up requests.Reporting to the Digital Services and Information Security Manager, duties will include:

  • architecture and design of systems to support the needs of Research and wider SRUC focussing on providing a flexible and manageable storage and compute platform.
  • design and manage infrastructure implementations and changes across a wide variety of network and server technologies, these include, but will not be restricted to:
  • - Windows and Linux server administration.
  • - some hands on with containerisation technologies e.g.., Docker.
  • - responsibility for relevant backups and batch jobs
  • - identity management; Shibboleth, Ezproxy, Modern Auth, Oauth.
  • - support, patching maintenance and monitoring of physical and virtual server infrastructure.
  • - ensuring data confidentiality, integrity and availability (backups, disk encryption etc)

  • development - Plan major product upgrades and testing.
  • change Control - Assess impact of changes and agree formal change control with line managers to minimise risk of service disruption.
  • QA/testing - ensuring all changes made at a production level are appropriately tested and approved.
  • training and Documentation - provide and maintain end user training documentation and ensure system level documentation is up to date.
  • ensuring all group policies are implemented and adhered to.
  • Working outside of normal business hours when required to minimise disruption of services to the end users.
  • 3rd party supplier relationships
  • keeping up to date with latest security and technology developments.
