Job Description

We are proud to be an award-winning geothermal company and a leading specialist in all aspects of the UKs geothermal resources. Our mission therefore is to access the abundant geothermal energy of the earths subsurface to provide zero-carbon, 24 hour renewableheating and cooling to industrial, commercial and domestic energy users. We are passionate about minimising the energy industrys negative impact on the environment and are looking to appoint an equally ardent Energy Engineer to join us on our mission. Our services are sought after across a wide range of systems: mine water heat pumps, open and closed loop ground-source heat pumps, and deep geothermal systems - including some world-first Net-Zero heating projects. We support clients from the early optionsappraisal stage, through feasibility study, project definition, development, construction supervision, commissioning, and into the operations phase. This role will therefore be evaluating and developing such geothermal and renewable heating and cooling projectsacross the UK and internationally, always ensuring the outputs are sufficient to meet the project scope.Responsible for the engineering and other technical aspects of thermal energy use from geothermal resources, including both subsurface and surface engineering aspects. You will be required to have a strong understanding of the three main engineering areasof harnessing low-carbon thermal energy - (1) heat resource engineering, (2) plant room engineering and (3) heat delivery engineering.Duties & Responsibilities

  • Informing and coordinating (alongside the Project Manager) desk-based studies across ground-source / water-source heat pumps, thermal storage, mine-water energy and deep geothermal applications.
  • Oversee engineering workflows, on a project-by-project basis, to identify and fulfil project-specific requirements and responsibilities.
  • Coordination of sub-contractors during project construction or maintenance on geothermal heat pump installations.
  • Undertake engineering analysis (supply and demand) to assess, design and develop low-carbon energy systems, focusing on thermal energy extraction from shallow and deep geothermal resources.
  • Assess and quality assure the teams design of geothermal engineering and development projects.
  • Collaborate with geoscience colleagues to integrate the geological and engineering aspects of projects as required.
  • Design and configure key components/equipment required in geothermal-related systems, utilising software tools when appropriate to support or verify solutions.
  • Produce process flow diagrams and other technical drawings, on a project-by-project basis, for design options.
  • Produce cost estimates and carbon-saving estimates based on selected solution(s) and model and analyse the techno-economic impact of selected solution(s).
Site WorkWhile the role is primarily desk-based, some time will be spent on-site. The on-site activities are very varied and require a wide range of skills. Examples of specific site work might include:
  • On-site communication with clients and subcontractors during project construction or maintenance.
  • Operation and diagnostics of installed equipment during maintenance works (e.g. water pumping equipment, building management system, heat pump controls and borehole header works)
  • Deployment, programming and installation of specialist sensors.
  • Accessing, downloading and analysing sensor data on site.
  • Deploying specialist flow testing and thermal response testing equipment to site and carrying out tests, including troubleshooting when issues arise.
  • Carrying out a variety of tasks on-site to investigate the performance of heating systems (e.g. analysis of real-time heat and electricity meter readings).
