Job Description

OverviewWe are currently recruiting Event Chefs to work at a variety of different events. Most of our events are with a small selection of high-quality event caterers in interesting venues, working with top quality produce. We have events all over Scotland and arecurrently recruiting chefs who can work in Edinburgh, East & West Lothian, The Borders and the surrounding areas.Job DescriptionOne of the benefits of being an event chef is the variety of kitchens, cuisines, equipment, and ways of working you come across. The events we supply chefs to vary from those that require relatively basic skills and experience, through to some needing highlyexperienced and skilled chefs. The standards of food can be anything from those expected in award winning kitchens with multiple AA Rosettes, and other accolades as well as more basic menus. In short there are opportunities at all levels. The most common requests are for chefs to come and support an event kitchen with on-the-day prep, set up, cooking, plating and clean-down of the event kitchen. We are always careful to match people up as best we can to the right bookings and the duties may vary depending on your level of experience and which assignments you take on. It is likely you may be asked to:Run a section of the event kitchen during servicePrepare and carry out prep lists to ensure mise en place is readyBe willing to adapt to kitchens that can be anywhere from a marquee set up, to a high-profile historic venue, all with their own different challengesWork across different sections in the kitchenLog temperature checks, keep the kitchen clean and tidy and carry out any other health & hygiene practices.Take overall responsibility running the kitchen for more senior bookingsPeople this may suitThe reasons chefs choose event work, and the type of person that takes on these roles are varied. Many have full or part-time jobs and enjoy working in a different environment for the occasional shift, learning new dishes and techniques, while earning someextra money. There are also some who have other commitments from family, study, and hobbies through to other jobs such as offshore working or another part-time role. Many of the chefs we work with also have their own business and top up their work with eventchef shifts as and when available. The most important thing is that you have a good attitude, are dependable, and are willing to work to the specs, recipes, and standards that each client requests. What we ask of youAttitude is arguably the most important aspect of being a great relief chef. We look for people who can adapt to different kitchens, and have a helpful, positive, grown-up approach to work. The other big ask is that you are dependable and turn up in a timely manner to bookings as arranged. Even more important than starting an assignment on a positive note, is making sure that you finish bookings well - with a smile, a handshake, and the knowledgethat the client would love to have you back. If you do that, you will quickly find you are offered lots of work!Try and be flexible when considering bookings. We dont expect anybody to say yes to everything, but the more we work together the better we can understand what kitchens work for you, and in turn well be able to offer you the bookings you enjoy the most. What we promise youHaving worked with thousands of relief chefs over a twenty-year period we understand that there are good agencies out there, and many who miss the mark. We are not a faceless app, we prefer to build long-term relationships with our chefs, and our clients. We take the welfare of our candidates seriously and that is one reason why we have worked with many for such a long time. Whilst the world of relief chefs isnt always perfect, we promise we willDo our best to offer you events that will be suitable for you based on what you have told us you are looking for and your experience.Make every effort to ensure we are partnering with good employers who pay and treat their relief chefs well.Deal with any issues promptly, seeing them through until resolved.Ensure all details of bookings are communicated clearly, efficiently, and promptly, so you know all the key information. If a workplace repeatedly falls short of our expectations, we will stop working with them - we want to send you to good, respectful, fair kitchens.Process wages, holiday pay and other queries quickly and accurately.WagesEvent Chef work is paid weekly on an hourly basis, one week in hand. We constantly monitor the rates offered to chefs across Scotland and aim to pay good rates, for interesting and varied work. Depending on the booking you take on, hourly rates for eventchef work in 2022 vary between £13 to £18 per hour, and the rate for each booking will always be clearly communicated before you take on any work. Higher rates are available for senior chefs looking to work on longer-term live-in relief chef bookings. For events that are a little further afield, you will usually be paid your travel costs to the booking. For event chef bookings you will:Get paid weekly on a PAYE basis on a FridayAccrue holiday pay in addition to the quoted hourly rate for every hour worked, which you can take at any timeReceive a weekly payslip clearly showing your pay detailsBe eligible for a workplace pension after 3 monthsTomtain Recruitment offers the services of an employment agency for permanent work and an employment business for temporary work. Tomtain Recruitment is acting as an employment business in relation to this vacancy (except for any bookings where you are employeddirectly by the client, in which case we are acting as an employment agency).
