Job Description

NHS LothianCONSULTANTGENERAL & TRAUMA SURGERYReference: CG2123 NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. This post is a full-time (10 PA) substantive clinical appointment to augment the current surgical service. The successful applicant will work as part of a team providing general surgical services that includes treatment of benign Upper GI disease and complex hernias, both laparoscopic and open, but which excludes bariatric surgery and upper GI cancer resections. The successful applicant will also provide on call and emergency cover for the general/UGI surgical service and, on a separate rota, provide clinical supervision to the Trauma ward for four weeks of the year. The Trauma rota includes weekends on-site and on call from home after hours and is more a clinical management role, overseeing the multidisciplinary care of patients in the Major Trauma ward and critical care areas.Applicants should have a wide experience in General Surgery including emergency and Trauma surgery and have additional experience in both elective and emergency benign upper gastro-intestinal and laparoscopic surgery. Specialist skills such as diagnostic endoscopy and advanced laparoscopic skills may be supported but are not essential. The Department has recently acquired a da Vinci robot and the successful candidate may have the opportunity to help develop this service.There will be some time available for outpatient clinics and elective inpatient and day case surgery based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with outreach elective sessions at St John’s Hospital, Livingston.Applicants will be expected to be Fellows of an appropriate College of Surgeons and have a certificate of higher surgical training.
