The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and motivated team of geriatricians and stroke physicians.Medicine for the Elderly activity will include in-patient care for frail older people, contribution to the assessment and management of older people in the AMAU, community services and contribution to the weekday (Monday – Thursday) consultant on call rota for Medicine for the Elderly at the Western General Hospital.Stroke medicine activities will include activities on both Western General Hospital and RIE sites. At the Western General Hospital it will include stroke outreach, assessment of patients presenting with possible stroke/TIA in the AMAU and cover for the 24 bedded stroke unit. At the RIE there will be a sessional commitment to leading the hyperacute stroke team responsible for assessing patients with acute presentations, overseeing delivery of thrombolysis and, in the near future, thrombectomy. This will involve ward rounds on the hyperacute stroke unit (which is in planning stage) and involvement in the regular departmental consultant meetings, radiology, quality improvement and research meetings. The post holder will contribute to the regional telestroke rota which supports decision making out with 9 - 5 Monday - Friday and extended hours working on the RIE site into evenings and weekend days.Within both sites there is a passion for education, training, quality improvement and clinical research, therefore non-clinical interests will be encouraged. The successful candidate will contribute to service planning; delivery of undergraduate teaching; supervision of junior doctors; clinical governance and quality improvement and growing the clinical research portfolio including acting as principal investigator (PI) for network sponsored trials.The post is for a Consultant in Medicine for the Elderly & Stroke Medicine and will be for up to 10 PAs, of which 2 PAs will be to support the South East of Scotland Hyperacute Stroke Service. Out of hours and on call duties will support the South East of Scotland Hyperacute Stroke Service and contribution to the weekday (Monday – Thursday) consultant on call rota for Medicine for the Elderly at the Western General Hospital.This is a full-time post; however, anyone wishing to work less-than-full-time will be considered.Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of CCT or already in possession of CESR (CP) at the time of interview for the post.
