Job Description

We have created an exciting post–CCT level clinical fellow position in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to provide advanced tertiary level training in advanced luminal endoscopy (complex gastroscopy, advanced colonoscopy & EUS).This advanced fellow post is aimed at gastroenterologists who are nearing or have completed their CCT in Gastroenterology and have the required competency in diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy to facilitate the limited endoscopy and service requirement for this post. It may be suitable to ST5-6 level gastroenterology trainees who have the required JAG certificates for gastroscopy and/or sigmoidoscopy and where an aptitude has been shown in one of described sub-specialty luminal disciplines.The post is designed to allow successful candidates to continue to develop their clinical skills and work towards an MD/PhD at the University of Birmingham if they wish. It will involve dedicated research time whilst providing specialist clinical training in one of the described sub-specialties. The post will start as soon as possible until 06/04/2021, there may be the option to apply for a higher degree following discussions with consultant supervisors.The team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham are national leaders in their respective fields. There may be a number of exciting future strands to the group’s research portfolio including the use of artificial intelligence for Barrett’s neoplasia detection, radiofrequency ablation for a variety of indications, cryotherapy for early luminal neoplasia and functional genomics for various Barrett’s phenotypes. Candidates will be expected to work on projects linked to translational research and audits in their respective sub-specialist fields.The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the endoscopy service to deliver scheduled weekend and evening endoscopy activity and backfill in the working week or very occasionally as middle grade cover on the gastroenterology ward. The majority of time will be dedicated to improving the candidates’ clinical acumen in the relevant sub-specialty through dedicated out-patient activity and relevant in-patient work with the remaining time dedicated to research. Work will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site and the University of Birmingham campus.University Hospitals Birmingham represents the largest acute Trust in the country and as such has one of the largest and most ethnically diverse IBD, nutrition and advanced endoscopy populations in the UK. The nutrition, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and hepatopancreatobilary cancer and liver transplant specialist MDTs for the region are established and centralised here and present a fantastic learning opportunity for the successful candidates. More detail is provided in the accompanying job descriptions.The post will be supervised by Dr Adil Butt, Dr Ralph Boulton and Dr Jason Goh. Dr Neeraj Bhala will provide informatics & epidemiology supervision. Service aspects will primarily be supervised by Dr Adil Butt. All the supervisors are respected core members of specialist MDTs and experienced gastroenterologists with established research backgrounds.
