Job Description

The RoleApplications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in synthetic organic chemistry with a particular emphasis on peptide synthesis, characterisation and chemical-biology. The research project is a collaboration between Professor Steven Cobb(Chemistry) and Immunodiagnostic Systems (Boldon, UK).The successful applicant will be expected to design and synthesise novel fluorinated versions of Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH is a 39-aa peptide hormone synthesized in the anterior pituitary gland. ACTH increases steroid production e.g. cortisol, and subsequently high levels of steroids control ACTH levels by a negative feedback loop. Detection and monitoring of ACTHlevels in the body are important for range of reasons including in the diagnosis of Cushings disease/syndrome and Addisons Disease. The fluorinated ACTH proteins prepared will be used as 19F NMR probes to elucidate the degradationpathways of ACTH, which will in turn aid in the development and design of improved diagnostic tests.Responsibilities:

  • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
  • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder.
